All of a sudden when I start my Windows 98 SE computer I get this message.

"Cannot load a device file that is specified in system.ini. The performance
of windows should not be affected without this file.
C:progra~1\symantec\symevnt.386. Press any key to continue"

I press any key then I get this,

"Error: Unsupported data configuration. Press any key to continue"

When I press a key, my computer shuts down. The only way to start it is in
safe mode, but I still can not find out what the problem is.

Is there anything I can do in safe mode that would tell me what the problem
is?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

What did you do just prior to getting this error? Did you install or uninstall any
software or hardware?

Symantec makes the Norton products. You might be able to find out
something about the problem by going to this web site, specifying the
Norton product and version that you have, and searching the Symantec
Knowledge Base for words from the error message, or by using the
automated support assistant:

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/consumer.html

Another approach would be to go to Safe mode and un-install any Norton
product and see if that fixes the problem. Before doing that, make
sure that you have the product's CD (or downloaded installation file)
and product code in case you want to re-install it.
