The eagerly awaited PMDG 747, released today, is experiencing such heavy
demand that it's server for purchase and download cannot cope and would be
punters, who are trying to get onto the PMDG forum on AVSIM for info or to
complain, have caused that server to go down as well.
No more AVSIM forums for a few days they say.
The world's gone mad !!

I was just about to ask where you got such scandalous info and went back to
check. It does indeed look as if the 747 release has crashed AVSIM or at
least the PMDG forum which is offline. They changed the message in the last
ten mins so it no longer mentions malicious activity. Funny you can't even
buy this thing because the activity is so high.

Makes me want one to tower over the 737NG I already have :-))

I do wonder if Marcel is in the queue to buy one???

Hi Geoff.

Glad to see Avsim have got the forums back, albeit without PMDG.

At over $50 for the 747 amazing how many folk are waving their credit cards
around! Must admit I'm one of them but looks as if we will have to form an
orderly queue. Ah well, as you say, back to the 737 NG

Take care out there guys

I'll check in after the weekend...
I like what they did on the PMDG website. THAT's how to advertise that your
product is ready!

I'll let you fellas in on a little secret.
I flew the 737NG last Sunday for the first time in 5 months...I had so much
trouble getting everything set up that I missed something in my flightplan
which made it impossible for me to intercept it.
Flaps 5 on take off, as usual, everything trimmed just right but it was
next to impossible to get it to climb.

Sheesh! I began to wonder if I was even ready to try the 747 again.
But who cares? I want it! I must have it! She will be mine! :-)

*sigh*
Paid for it but didn't get the confirmation page so didn't get a download
link.
Looks like I got a bit of a wait.
If it lives up to the hype, I'd have paid double for it. After all, PS1
sold for over $200 and it's said the PMDG 747 matches the PS1's systems, if
not rivalling them.

Yup, we got slammed and are trying to get things back in order. For those
that "groove" on this stuff, here are some stats (forum 136 is the PMDG
forum):

Jul29: 82,416 forum PHP calls, of which 35,264 for forum=136 (42.8%)

Jul30: 78,243 forum PHP calls, of which 31,546 for forum=136 (40.3%)

Jul31: 105,464 forum PHP calls, of which 54,615 for forum=136 (51.8%)

Aug01: 102,810 forum PHP calls, of which 55,211 for forum=136 (53.7%)

Aug02: [interrupted due to problems, legitimate "served" calls listed]

Aug02: 37,046 forum PHP calls, of which 25,468 for forum=136 (68.7%)

As I said, we are trying to bring the system back online, but will probably
wait the mad rush out. When things calm down, we'll be back online as
always. And, just so everyone knows, we'll be bringing online this weekend a
new and much bigger server to handle forum traffic (to the tune of $7,000 or
so).

Hmm-- I can't work out why a release of a PMDG a/c would bring down the

Massive amount of complaints from people who have paid for the product but
didn't get the download link due to server congestion. I'm 1 of them, but I
didn't complain. Support got back to me within 12 hours after I emailed
them and told me it will be sorted out shortly. If 1 forum gets that many
complaints, the entire AVSIM forum suffers a meltdown.
This add on has broken new ground as PMDG have hacked the internal workings
of FS9 and have implemented new systems previously thought impossible to
add.

Too bad they couldn't have removed just the PMDG forum. That way people
who needed support from other vendors like PSS, Active Sky, etc. would have
them available.
Then again, I suppose the PMDG threads would have just spread to other
topics and crashed the system anyway.

Eh?
My 737NG is the 600/700 made by PMDG and I've been flying the Howard 500
for the past 5 months instead.

What I can't work out is why PMDG doesn't coordinate long awaited sales
like this one with more than one website?

Well I am one of the complainants here, have downloaded new 747 but on
installation the validation doesn't work! As per instructions I
emailed PMDG support, but with all this mayhem a fat lot of good that
is going to do me. I should have adhered to my instincts and waited a
couple of weeks at least. However it is a bit rich that they take your
money then can't deliver!

Bruce,
try to understand that there are literally thousands, if not 10's of
thousands of people in your situation who are having some kind of problem
with a download or validation.
Just to clarify, are you using the email that is the same one on your PMDG
registration page AND the order number that is located on the first line of
the email that was sent to you.
It should read:
Thank you for your order. Your order number is: xxxxx

The order number is the one on the first line of the order "Description
: PMDG eCommerce Order: 44747" (as copied and pasted from the email.)
The same number is with my order on PMDGs site. The othetwo fields are
my email address and my password both of which give me access to PMDGs
e-commerce system, so they must be right. There have been suggestions
that typing in the text rather than copying and pasting is the answer
but this has not worked for me. What has got me puzzled is that this
validation thing seems to work for some but not others - I just suspect
there is more at issue here than server conjestion.

Just tried again for the umpteenth time in eight hours - still no joy,
so I am off to bed now as it is nearly midnight in Australia.

Bruce
I think you have to wait for PMDG support to get back to you. The installer
expires itself if you try to install too many times but don't quote me on
it. That's not a problem though as PMDG will simply email you a new order
number. Believe me, there is no hidden agenda on PMDG's part. Always
remember, any emails you send to support should be short, polite and
courteous.
They aren't going anywhere and will get back to you within the next day or
2.

Something I found for you Bruce.
-------------------------------------

Close down the installer between every attempt to validate.

Double and triple check your entered information with the information in
your eCommerce order.

The order number is available if you log on to the eCommerce site at
www.precisionmanuals.com and choose View previous order.

You might want to change the password and try again as that seems to help
some poeple. You do this loggging on to the eCommerce site and choose Modify
Personal Information.

If you haven't recieved an auto response from support@precisionmanuals.com
stating that they have recieved your mail and will process it in due time I
would suspect it got caught in some spam filter. I would suggest contacting
them through either the eCommerce site Contact Us option or resending your
email from another account.

Hope it helps,

I don't have the plane just yet.
I'm patiently waiting until things have settled down a little and I've read
up on some of the problems people are having.

In the meantime I'm truely experiencing a new type of high as I progress
further and further into the aircraft's manual...the AOM.
Currently I'm at page 41, and taking notes ofcourse (!), but I'm already so
impressed with every effort put into this beautiful aircraft that I can
honestly say that not only will it be an absolute joy to fly but also well
worth the pricetag since it is easily the most complex and complicated
aircraft MSFS has ever seen. (A36 owners will probably not agree! <g> )

I can only imagine it being topped in the near future by the A380, but
perhaps PMDG will estonish the hell out of us by making the MD-11 even
nicer than their 744. But I seriously doubt it.

I've already come to the conclusion that my previous 744, the PSS744 Pro,
is a kid's toy compared to the PMDG744.
There's just so much to set up and keep a close eye on, that programming
the FMC is not much different than programming your VCR.

The options in the PMDG744 seem almost endless. I already know that when
flying this 744 I'll be spending most of my time relaxing in the VC (not to
be mistaken with the WC) than any other view.
Time for screenshots when flying this big lady? Not very likely.

In my eyes she's already golden!

To quote Elvis (for the very first time in my life!)..."I'm all shook up!"

Naaah....I flew all the flights I wanted to fly.
I logged around 60 hours (not a whole lot I know), but the 737 has its
limits when it comes to distance.

So in the meantime, patiently awaiting the release of the 744, I've been
flying the Howard 500 around the world. Now I've taken a break from that to
read the 744 manual.

Well after nearly 24 hours this thing still doesn't work and no email
auto or otherwise from PMDG. Unlikely to be a spam filter, but I will
try the contact us suggestion. I'm using the order number that is on
the e-commerce site - it is the same as in the confirmation e-mail.

It seem this thing is starting to get a lot of people upset based on
comments in other forums - not good PR for PMDG. Pity because I like
others caught up in this matter have been a loyal customer for a number

I completely agree the PSS 747 is amateur hour compared to this puppy, but I
tell you what, if I hadn't learned to fly the PSS 747, I'd have no hope in
programming the FMC in the PMDG one. Still haven't flown via FMC yet
though. But HAVE handflown it. Still picking my jaw up off the floor.

Bruce, please don't get stressed out. There are always glitches in some
systems and programs. I remember when the 737 was released, there were some
problems with some users but every single one of them got sorted out.

Well I am pleased to say the activation issue seems to have been solved
- saw a post on Flightsim that PMDG had fixed whatever was causing it
and sure enough I was able to validate and install this bird. I was
starting to get alarmed as other posts were indicating that PMDG was
blaming firewall settings etc., but nevermind alls well that ends well
as they say

To be honest, programming the FMC isn't that hard compared to all the
systems that need to be monitored on the PMDG747.

Manual approaches and auto-pilot approaches are about 50% here.
I sometimes catch myself missing the first waypoint right after take-off
because I was stupid enough to let the ATC vector me out.
No more.
From now on I only use ATC when I'm on long final or just about to come up
the base leg.

How does the PMDG747 handle compared to the PSS747?
Any noticable drop in framerates? The team sure spent a lot of time working
to ensure that the drop in fps stays minimal, so I hope they succeeded in
that.

Hard to compare as I flew the PSS version with a P2 processor and a 64MB
video card.
The PMDG fps are above 18 so I'm happy and thats in VC.

Well one thing seems clear: I just dug up the PSS manuals, one of which
contains technical data and checklists for the 747-400, and compared it to
the technical data and specs provided in the PMDG747 manual, and it looks
like the PMDG747 is based on that same data. And that means it's probably
actual aircraft specs provided by Boeing.

This is actually good news, because that means that the checklists that
came with the PSS747 can be used on the PMDG747 too.

Hi Marcel,

I guess we won't be hearing from you for about a month, then. :-))

Lucky you got that head start with the Manual.

Two months, mate! <g>

Yeah. I guess so.
Getting familiar with all the systems is going to be something else.
I'm even thinking of buying a 4-engine throttle quadrant.
Preferably one with fuel cut-off switches.

It's gonna take me at least a week to familiarize myself with everything,
get myself ready for that first flight. I have to forget I ever owned the
PSS744 and start from scratch.
Fortunately I know my way around an FMC-CDU, so that's 20% of the problems
covered. :-)
