EE Times has an interesting article about AMD's future plans for 45nm and beyond.

Ober declared that at the 45-nm node and beyond silicon providers not only have to deliver software and the host hardware, but they need to develop it at a higher level of abstraction to create stable configurable platforms in regular arrays. “In a few metal layers, at minimal expense, the solution provider can tailor the platform to different market segments,” Ober predicted.

Such environment is most likely to set the stage for significant changes in the industry, Ober concluded.

He used a lot of words to say very little. Point we want to put our chips in more stuff. Kind of a lame story not really worth AMDs time to go out and do the interview. We all know soon basic TVs will have CPU for intergrated MP3 and MPEG play back and what next.

If anyone is interested in seeing some of Intel's future plans, and current achievements in process technology, head to the bottom of this page:

and click the "High Bandwidth" link directly next to Paolo Gargini's name for the presentation. Unfortunately it appears to only work in IE, but it could just be my Firefox installation.

He talks in detail about a couple of the technologies they have at their disposal. Very good talk I thought.
