I need some help. I have an E-machines T3256 with a 300 watt power supply, an Amd Athlon XP 3200 cpu, and the nVidia Mx-400 video integrated graphics (these items are all stock). I upgrade the RAM from 512Kb to 2 GB. I need an AGP 8x video card. I was thinking about getting the XFX GeForce 6200/256mb card from tiger direct(here is the link):

Is this a good graphics card and will I see a noticeable improvement?

Also, what is the best card I can get for my system (providing I don't upgrade andything else) and will it be worth it in terms of noticable performance?

Any other video cards you guys can recommend would be greatly apppreciated. Thanks for taking the time to help a noob like me:).

I did not know they even made that card anymore...

If you are serious about upgrading (since you did put in 2G of ram), try something like this card..

BFG 7800GS

What kind of games will you be playing on it? If you even want to get a decent video card, you're going to need a bigger power supply.

Do yourself a favor and buy a new, good PSU when you get your video card. Trust me. I work in a computer repair shop and I see at least 3 E-Machines a week that have blown PSUs, and in about 50% of the cases, something else in the machine gets blown as well.

Installing a new video card is going to strain your current PSU. For the Athlon XP 3200+ AMD reccomended a 350 watt, and you're already running below that.

Aside from the power supply issue, I would say go with an x800GTO or x800XT. Both very good cards, both AGP. I run WoW on my x800XT at 1024x768 with everything maxed and I get 40 - 85 FPS all the time (and I only have 1GB of RAM, not the 2GB you're running). I'm looking to upgrade my monitor to a 19" LCD in the near future, so we'll see how it does at higher resolutions (though I have faith it'll hold up admirably).

one thing you may want to watch out for is psu connector compatability. I know for dell atleast some of the 20-24 pin power connectors are wired different than a standard ATX power supply, in an effort to have you purchase a new/upgraded powersupply from the original manufactorer. I did a quick google search and nothing came up but its something worth looking into, Id hate to hear you had to return your brand new psu because the wires didnt match up :?

E-Machines use standard Motherboards that you can buy off the shelf, so you don't need to worry about the pin-outs on the ATX power connector. I replace the PSUs in E-Machines with generic ones damn near every day.

As to the earlier comment suggesting you get a Rosewill PSU - I would warn against it. Everything I have ever seen from Rosewill has been a total POS.

Antec is a good company with a good price/quality ratio.
