Evening all. Need some help with a problem I have. I'll just blurt out as much info as I can so you can give me the best course of action.
Have quite a nice system. 3gh Evesham Micro pc (was top spec when I got it). Needed a gfx card upgrade and delayed upgrading the whole lot to PCI-E(proc, mobo, ram, gfx etc...), as that can wait until late this year/first thing next year, and got a sweet deal on a new AGP 850 pro, flashed and over clocked it to X850XTPE with after market cooling. You know whats coming right....
However now my pc keeps conking off during high usage. First happened after 6 plus hours of BF2. And again after 4. No game crash machine just dies. Looked around (as I don't knwo as much as you guys) and found it can be a common problem when over clocking kit and as a general rule of thumb I need AT LEAST a 350w PSU. One I have currently is 280 which probs explains the crashes after extanded use.
So now I need PSU that fits the bill. Never had to buy one before so I don't really know what I'm looking for. Don't mind paying good money for a new PSU as long as I can take what I buy with me when I upgrade to PCI-E next year. Or even a new case if thats what you think is best. Don't want to spend dead money on kit that I can't take with me.
So ideas would be greatly appreciated and even a few linkys to websites that sell em quite cheap if pos.
thanks for reply. Guide advised 340W but I'll get a 400W to be on the safe side.
Any recommendations by anyone?
And will any PSU I get know be compat when I upgrade next year? Eg you don't need a differnet psu for PCI-E than AGP?
Today i recommend for you the enermax noisetaker 420W (as always), she's a solid and quiet piece of work that one. and yes it has the 6-pin pci-e connector, which is preferable (although you can always use an adaptor).
by the way if you're overclocking, then is it possible that you just haven't upped the voltage enough to keep whatever's crashing stable?
thanks for replies thus far guys. Aprreciate it. Know what wattage I need and some good manufacts.
However the key thing I'm looking for is a good PSU that I can buy and use now on my AGP system (PSU I have now is 20 pin) that I will still be able to use when I build a new machine next year with PCI-E.

I buy the above board. It will still be good when I upgrade to PCI-E?
£50 - 60 is about my price limit.
Are you saying that you're going to want to upgrade your motherboard soon? If so, you'll want a PSU with a 20+4-Pin main connector as most motherboards made these days have a 24-pin connection. Some PSUs come with only 20-pin connectors (like the one you listed above), others come with 24-pin connectors, and still others come with 20+4-pin connectors which work with either motherboard connection. You'd be able to connect to your current board and your future board with the 20+4-pin type...
