I'm trying to connect my girlfriends computer to mine. Her computer has a built in ethernet card which is connected to our DSL modem. I added another card to connect to the network. I put in an identical card in my computer and connected them with a crossover cable.

I've set up TCP/IP with an IP of 192.168.0.x on each computer with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. I also set up IPX/SPX and NetBIOS on each of them. They are both on the same workgroup name. I tried to ping the secondary computer from the primary one and it timed out.

What am I doing wrong? I want to share files and internet to the secondary computer.

you shouldn't need IPX/SPX, but anyway... Do the lights look good on the 2 NIC's? Also, PC with 192.168.0.2 can't ping PC with 192.168.0.3? Is that the situation? I'm still suspecting hardware. Also can they each ping 127.0.0.1?

Well I know the card on mine works because I can hook the modem up and surf the net on my computer.

The one on hers is a diffrent story. I pulled it out of storage from about a year ago. The light is on and every once inawhile it flashes, as if it's transmitting data.

Both computers can ping the IP you listed.

Oh. 192.168.0.1 can't ping 192.168.0.2.

There are only 2 computers. Hers, the one which I want to hook up the internet to, I assigned 192.168.0.1. Mine is 192.168.0.2.

at this point I'd re-install TCP/IP. If it's xp. here is how to do it. All other MS OS's can be uninstalled and reinstalled normally
