Boot Problems

I have a Windows 98 SE PC that boots up fine, but right before the desktop
icons and start menu should appear nothing happens. I can hit alt+ctrl+del
and bring up the task manager, but nothing is running. So, I attempted to
reinstall Windows 98. The initial setup session went fine, but now it just
comes up to a dark blue screen and just hangs. (This is the screen where
the hardware is supposed to be detected and stuff.) If I wait long enough,
I eventually get a Spool32 illegal operation error. Any ideas? I'm
begining to think there is some kind of hardware failure...

Assuming that the SPOOL32 is indicative of the main problem (as
opposed to being just one of the problems), you could try unplugging
your printer and see if you are then able to boot.

No printer is connected Karl, and one hasn't been. Any other ideas?

Run a Netsearch for
SPOOL32 trojan

See if any of the trojan viruses described fit your situation.

Hmmm, the next port of call would be to boot into Safe Mode, run
MSCONFIG and disable anything that is not Microsoft / part of Windows,
then boot back into Normal mode and see if your PC boots at all.

I am unable to get into safe mode too. It simply hangs with the "safe mode"
in each of the four corners.

Start the computer in "Command Prompt" by tapping the F8 key during
bootup, then type "scanreg /restore" and restore a registry that predates
the problem.

It could be a number of things : Graphics card, hard disk,
motherboard.

Given the SPOOL32 error when you try Normal Mode I'd see if you can
borrow a second-hand graphics card and try to boot into Safe Mode with
that second-hand graphics card. If that works, then you've got your
solution.

If it does not then I do not think a corrupted registry is the course
but rather a more serious hardware problem like hard disk,
motherboard, or both.
