For som reason nearly every computer store i've seen is actually selling the Pentium D 930 for $313 and the D 830 still at the $380 price (and i bought the 830....i feel ripped off).
why is the D930 cheaper than the D830, isnt the D930 a newer model with the new Virtualization Technology or somthin? i dont get it, how could a newer model at the same speed with newer technology b cheaper than a older model? is there like a problem with the 930?

Assuming chip yields are the same, every time Intel/AMD goes to a smaller die size they're making a cheaper CPU. That 930 requires less material to make than the older 830 you bought.

I dont think they are making the D 8xx series for retail anymore, or if they are in very limited quanities.
In all reality the D9xx series is less expensive to manufacture.
There also is more than likely a surplus of inventory, so to move it out they cut prices on what needs to moved.

In many cases newer isn't always more expensive. The 9xx series is Intel's latest dual core processors so all their marketing is going toward that product. The reason why the prices for the 8xx series haven't gone down is because there is no reason to. If the 8xx series were to be very cheap, people would buy them over the 9xx series which makes it seem like their new product isn't selling and is underperforming. Others have mentioned that the 65nm 9xx series is cheaper to produce which means that it's easier to recoup the cost of the price reductions, but it's still probably more of a marketing decision than anything else. The reason why the 8xx series are still around is not only because there is excess inventory, but because Intel must maintain a stable supply of their older products in case people are looking for a direct replacement. This is especially important in the corporate market as part of the stable image program allowing computer standardization and easy configuration and repair.
