old virtual directory

howdy again...

cleaning up that old w98 machine.
it was originally part of a network that accessed another novell network (ok
i admit i dont really understand why),,,, but the network guy had to create
what he called a virtuall directory to 'fool' something so the two networks
would co-exist...doesn't matter....

how should i get rid of this virtual directory which is now empty except for
having it's own recycle bin - I "think" I have removed anything that points
to it...is it safe to just delete this? or what

thanks!

First make sure "Show All Files" is enabled in Folder Options, View tab.
Just to make sure the directory is really empty.

I'm not sure how this "virtual directory" was created, but I suspect you
*can't* delete it. Go ahead and try. I doubt it will cause any problems. If
it can't be deleted, then I'd search the Registry using REGEDIT for the
directory's name. Export those key(s) that include that directory name, and
open the resulting REWG files in Notepad. Paste the contents into a reply
here so we can see how it was constructed.

If this is the same machine as the one in your previous post, why don't you
simply reformat and reinstall from scratch?

Gary,
Thanks, I'm search the reg now.

Yes, same machine as the other post. The reason I want to avoid reformat is
I use this machine for remote access to access control systems and security
systems and only that. The programs and modems for the systems are
proprietary and software is a pain to reinstall...just don't wanna mess with
that now. And, I think some of the old network/netware stuff was slowing the
machine down, so just trying to clean it up first.

I'd be real careful about messing with that machine, then. I'd also not
update it. This is a case where "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies in
spades. If you're not using the machine for internet access, or other apps
where you regularly use files from elsewhere, then there is little to be
worried about with regard to security. If it's networked to other more
vulnerable systems, proper networking practices should be used to protect
it. For things like modern AV scans, use F-Prot from a bootable CD (if the
Win98 system can boot CDs.) If you *must* update or upgrade components, see
if you can create full-system backups before each update, etc.

I'd concentrate of "leaning" out the machine, paying attention to background
apps, etc., do the usual maintenance procedures. See my article

General method for safe deletion of any file or folder:
1. Do not delete it: rename it by adding x before
its name as xFolder
2. Reboot and operate as normal.
3. If any installation calls this file or folder you will
get an error message, and you can rename the item
correctly.
3b. If no error messages, delete xFolder when you
get around to it.

thanks guys...nothing was referencing it in registry, although there was an
old intranet postoffice in the folder...so i held my breath and deleted the
folder...no problems so far.

out....off to read your article

thanks.
