If it is the Windows logon input window, press Cancel and you should boot to
the desktop.
Once in Windows click Start > Find > Folders/Files.

Type in the box:
Named: *.pwl
Containing text: leave blank
Search in: C:

Press Enter or click Search now (or something similar)
Rename any .pwl found to .pw_ . If all goes well on the next few boots then the
renamed files can be deleted.

Before rebooting, see this article:
*Note: If you have user profiles this will not work as stated in the article and
you will have to perform the steps in the link provided in the article for user
profiles.

How to Prevent a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me Logon Prompt at Startup

It has also been advised that you do not use the article Q135586, which has a
link included in the article. Its purpose is “to clear the User Name logon box
so it is blank each time you start Windows, it is not meant to prevent the
logon box from prompting you for a name/password.
Instead if you have TweakUI installed, check to make sure the “Clear Last User
At Logon check box is not checked. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel,
double click Tweak UI, click the Paranoia tab, if the box is checked, uncheck
it.

Sounds like she has set a boot-up password in the BIOS (hardware
configuration) settings on the computer. Refer to the Presario manual or
the Compaq support web site for details on how to reset the BIOS settings
and remove the password.

If no manual is available, removing the CMOS battery usually
resets BIOS to default settings, i.e. no password. You would
have to disconnect electricity, earth yourself, open the case,
locate the CMOS battery (a small silver disk about 12 mm. across),
unfasten its clip, wait 5 minutes, then replace the battery (correct
side up) and see what happens. Some PC main boards require
removal of a "card" (circuit board) before you can get at the battery.
