I don't know where Bear got his from, but the three I posted were all
the MSKB gave me. And the third of those seems not really a match! Don't
do that one, but the others seem worth a try. The numbers need not match
    necessarily.

The location doesn't really matter, MR, and seeing that this is a problem of
longstanding, it'd be well neigh impossible to determine how it happened.
As KB218632 points out, "This behavior can occur if the registry entries for
WordPad or Paint are damaged." The fix is to Uninstall MS Paint, delete all
Registry keys for MS Paint, and then reinstall it.

Hi I guess you can work it out, but I am a real beginner as computers are
concerned so would need to take thinks one step at a time.

First, I cannot see ms paint in " install/uninstall programs"

Second, Where would I reload "paint" from. I presume it is on the windows 98
    cd.

Third, if I attempt to fix paint Am I likely to end up with a Dead computer.

    Cheers Steve

    You install/uninstall via
    Control Panel-Add/Remove-Windows Setup-Accessories-Paint
    Have your Win98 CD ready.

You may not have to install/uninstall.
    Have a look here:
Err Msg: MSPAINT Caused an Invalid Page Fault... [Q185501]
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=185501
I have found that 95% of problems with MSPaint are fixed by this
    reference:

To resolve this problem, use registry editor to delete the following
    registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
    Version\Applets\Paint

This registry key is rebuilt the next time you start Paint.

    Nice catch, Alan.

Glad you are fixed. MSPaint won't be in the Install/Uninstall tab of
Add/Remove Programs. It will be in the Windows Setup tab...

    1. "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, "
    2. Click Accessories, and then click Details.
    3. It will show up as "Paint".

But I think it may be possible you have no Windows Setup tab. If so,
I''l go search for the thread in which that condition was solved or
explained. It was a tough one, IIRC. (Therefore, I'll give Edwards/Bear
    the first shot, maybe.)

    Hi,

Re, MS paint is there a clever way to set up the drawing area on the screen
so that it is equal to an A4 page size and have this format as "default", so
that when my son draws pictures he can just print them out without having to
resize them to fit a page.

At the moment, the pictures he draws are printed out on only a small area of
    an A4 sheet.

    Cheer Steve.

  13. Archived from groups: microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion (More info?)

You can't save a default layout in Paint. It opens with whatever size canvas it
was when it was last closed. But it's easy enough to save a blank BMP of the
correct size, and then use *that* as the template. I say "easy", though I have
to admit that it's a bit tricky. You have to play with resizing the canvas using
the mouse to drag on lower right corner of white "canvas" area -- you'll see a
little set of numbers indicating "{number of pixels wide} X {number of pixels
high}" -- and then check Page Setup to see how well it fills the paper. Note
that Paint can print images to span more than one sheet of paper, so make sure
the Page Setup diagram includes a full X from corner to corner of the shaded
    area.

Once you have it set, save the blank canvas as "A4_template.bmp" in a special
folder for your son. Then make it Read-Only. Let's assume it's saved as "C:\My
    Documents\Son's Drawings\A4_template.bmp."

Then create a shortcut on the Desktop (right-click>New>Shortcut) and make its
    command as follows:

    mspaint "C:\My Documents\Son's Drawings\A4_template.bmp"

(Space after mspaint) Use this shortcut to launch the file in Paint. When your
son goes to save it, it won't be allowed to overwrite, because it's
Read-Only--he'll have to save it with a different name. It will default to
whatever folder the template is in as the Save folder.

Now, Paint is not a very sophisticated program. Nor is BMP a particularly
sophisticated format, so printer settings are not saved with the file. You must
set the size of the template to match your default printer settings if you want
to make this as painless as possible for your son. The easiest thing to do is to
match your current default settings for paper size, orientation and margins. I
don't know what yours are, so I can't make a template for you. But if you have a
difficult time handling it, feel free to email me at grystnews@mvps.org with the
printer settings as they appear in the Page Setup dialogue from Paint, and I can
create it for you. (Also, let me know what screen resolution you're using, so
that we can make it possible for your son to see the entire canvas without
    scrolling.)

Might be easier to teach your son how to use Page Setup, <s>.
