How much of an OC from a 6800 GS?

With stock and third party cooling respectively (Arctic cooling Accelero or Sytrin KU Formula) , how much of an OC could you get out of 6800 GS? I'm more interested in how much you could get out of it from stock cooling.

Use RivaTuner and unlock it. You may not be able to overclock it as much but 16 pipes is better than 12 even at a slightly lower clockspeed

Yes...I got alot more out of unlocking it, than i did from O/C. Then i

overclocked it also, giving nice results.

Anyways, as you can see in my sig, mine's an eVGA...unlocked...and

with stock cooling i'm only getting 436/1160, although the nVIDIA

stock speeds are 350/1000. I figure removing stock HSF, and if needed,

a lap job and some AS5 along with some RAM sinks should help.

Current temps are 50c idle, 62c load with fan at 100%.

That's awesome to hear that you got such a good overclock out of it. with all out that extra stuff you were saying to increase the OC, you could probably get it upwards around 500/1250. You could probably get 450/1200 easy with a simple aftermarket HSF. The two best non water-cooled video HSFs are the Masscool/Sytrin Ku Formula and the Artic Cooling Accelero. You may want to look into those. You can probably find both of them for around $35-$40 with shipping.

I was wondering. It seems that the 6800 GS is just an NV40 core (6800 GT) with two pipelines and one vertex disabled. And, I know that the vanilla 6800s are on the NV40 core as well (atleast some of them are; they differ alot). So, wouldn't it be possible to just pick up a 6800, unlock and overclock it to a 6800 GT? Or is there some factor that I'm not taking into account?

It seems that you asked what kind of O/C you could get on the 6800GS,

and now you are telling me what i should be able to get...WTF.

Also you won't get a plain 6800 up to 6800GT spec, as it's just 128MB,

IIRC and core/mem speeds of 325/350(700) vs 6800 GT at 16/6 and

350/1000. I doubt you'll get the mem from 700 up to 1000.

LoL, calm down. I didn't mean to seem like I infact knew what you would be able to get those speeds -- I don't -- I was simply saying that (from what I gathered from you and others) you should be able to get those speeds from what you currently have with some good cooling (theoretically). I do know a good bit about cooling. Though, my knowledge on the oc'ing limitations of certain video cards is limited. Sorry if I was trying to seem like I knew what kind of OC you could get. It was more of an educated guess.

It definitely did. I'm going to go ahead and stick with buying the PNY 6800 GS. What kind of framerate do you get in various different games you play?

Actually, i don't even play games that tax my GPU much. I'm not into FPS,

RPG, or RTS games as i find them too unrealistic for my liking(hope this

doesn't start any kind of argumentive postings), I'm a motorhead at heart,

thus i like racing type games, etc. The main reason i bought this card was

because my R9600XT seemed to be holding back my O/C's and i was putting

together a P4 machine for my wife, and thought she deserved better than

the MX440 she had  . She always gets the hand-me-down stuff :D
