Umm that was hard to understand. OK no 8ms isn't the same as 3ms gray to gray and 5 ms white black white. 3ms gtg means it takes 3ms to go from gray to gray. 5ms wbw means it takes 5ms to go from white to black and back.

8ms *most likely means gtg* no to sure

Just about everything you would want to know about LCD's is on the other side of that link.

THG has a number of very good articles about LCD's, I like to recommend you read a couple of the articles. :)

It depends on what you're going to do with the machine 25ms is OK if gaming is not in the picture, if you're gaming the less of a response the better.

25ms produces smears when gaming in say first person shooters when you turn a corner fast, its not really noticable when the response is down to 12ms, and 8ms is even better, on a 25ms monitor I even noticed some slight smearing in DVD playback, but not on a 12ms.

Gaming and computer DVD playback are the 2 critical reasons for needing a fast response time, and the less the #s the faster the response.

I have a Dell 2405FPW with around a 20ms response, both gaming and videos are a great experience. Tho occasionally I see a suspect trail but minor, and at others I do, but mostly does not occur and definately does not interfere with gameplay.

I am also a proud owner of the Dell 2405, I play first person shooters (HL2, Doom3 etc) and it's fine. I also tend to play deathmatch so that really requires no blurring etc...and the screen does fine. Widescreen also gives you a slight advantage (if the game is widescreen enabled....and by this I do not mean stretched) as you can see 'more' to your left and right.

That is so true. The benefits far outweigh any rare ghosting effects occaisionaly.

The first LCD I bought was a 19" Viewsonic with a 25ms response time, got it home set her up and started playing games and noticed the smearing effect, boxed that sucker right up and took it back to the store, got myself a 19" Samsung Syncmaster 930B with an 8ms response and the difference was unbelievable, crisp, clear, sharp no smearing whatsoever.

I'm now running a 27" Westinghouse LCD Monitor/TV with a 12ms response time and its about the same as the 8ms Samsung, I haven't noticed any smearing at all, with yours being a 20ms you probably are just inside the door of not having a noticeable problem, and thats great for you, theres nothing worse than getting something like that and ending up being dissatisfied with it.

LCDs have definitely improved in their response time to even get to the point of being able to be used for gaming period, cause when they first came out they weren't worth a crap for gaming and couldn't even touch the response of a CRT monitor.

But the colors are so crisp and clear with an LCD I'm really glad they can perform like they can today, cause it delivers some awesome gaming.

How've you been Rich?

Make sure you read reviews on whatever monitor you plan to get. The specs might say 8ms response time but often sites like THG find that the average response time isn't even close to the manufacturers stated spec.

Also theres more than just response time. Color reproduction and spatial uniformity are important too.

I have a 19" Samsung 915N 8ms though and love it. Then theres also the 3 year warranty too.

I prefer Samsung monitor too. 8ms is pretty much standard
