I have an K8T Neo Mobo, on my system which came with a sata wd drive. I subsequently added an IDE drive. Everything was fine. I am now trying to add a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 300Gb sata drive. This I connect to the SATA2 on the board. However the drive does not appear to be recognised (mentions only the WD drive) and the system automatically reboots in a loop as it tries to start Windows. If I disconnect the interface, everything works normally.
My OS is XP Home.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can progress? I'm not really an expert in these matters so please keep it simple!

When I boot in safe mode the last driver listed is gagp30kx, but as that is an AGP driver it’s probably irrelevant.

Okay, let's see what we got here...I'm gonna try and eliminate some things that can't be the problem.

MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R K8T800 - Can't find any other users with severe problems, so that's good (hopefully).

XP Home - Shouldn't be the cause of this, adding an additional drive won't affect the OS particularly unless something other was installed, such as a Driver or piece of software.

VIA Drivers - Download that file here if you think it's a problem (2nd picture), I would recommend it because usually the last driver displayed booting to safe mode is the drive that causes the problem (in my experience).

Can you boot fully into safe mode? And when you plug the drive in and you say it loops, how far does it get? Do you see the loading screen with the blue bar going across? Do you have Service pack 1 or 2 installed? Did you install any unknown or special software or drivers recently? Did you download any Microsoft drivers lately?

Have you plugged that drive into another SATA port? Have you tried that drive in another computer? You say the drive isn't recognized, do you mean by the BIOS? It might be a bad SATA port, try a different one.

The via chipset don't support SATAII hdd. But.. if you carefully read the HDD label, you'll find info about how to make it work with SATAI controller ...

Check your BIOS and make sure your booting to the drive with your OS on it. Recently installed XP and somehow or another the BIOS was changed. Once I set it to boot to the correct drive, everything is fine.

Pat is on the money, also zero out the drive with any utility you'd like. Then in safe mode look for the drive under disk managment. Once there you should be able to add it to your system and change it to dynamic if youd like. Reboot and you "should" ok. The drive you have has a type of bootload on it that is makeing XP run a savedump.exe. If you still have this problem, you can always send the savedump to tech support for a read out.
