I've read a couple of articles out there (dont' have any of them bookmarked or handy) and StrangeStranger is always bringing it up in any thread that has to do with a PPU. Has anybody seen/heard any info on when ATI plans on releasing the API that will allow programmers to utilize the GPU for non-graphics processes such as ppu type operations, encoder assistance, blah blah blah? I'd really like to get my hands on it to see what you can actually do with it.

you should never believe anything i say :P although they don't seem to be doing anything i've heard about. they mentioned it months ago, so either their only allowing certain people to use it or it isn't top of their priorities compared to things dx10 related. there a post somewhere with them showing physics using x1900's, but i think that was using shaders. i'll see if i can find it.

just found this. it is not done without directx. it is done with shaders so is not AFAIk the best that can be done. http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=8573it takes a while to download but is pretty cool.

edit: here's a solution to everything :P http://theinquirer.net/?article=31385

edit2: thought i'd post this as it is quite interestinghttp://graphics.stanford.edu/~mhouston/public_talks/R520-mhouston.pdf
