Yesterday someone gave me a IBM Thinkpad 760EL. OS Win 98SE.
It will not boot past the Win 98 screen it just stops there. He said he was
messing around msconfig and unchecked something and doesn't remember what. I
tried the scanreg/restore in dos but still nothing.
Does anyone have helpful any ideas ? Thank You for your attention.

Copy and paste the following text to Notepad and save it to a floppy as
"a:\repair.reg". Start the Thinkpad in "Command Prompt", insert the
floppy, type "regedit a:\repair.reg" and press "Enter". Then type
"win" to start Windows. If you get the option to repair Internet
Explorer, select it. If you are prompted to restart, please remove
the floppy before doing so.

Ben
Thanks for the info. I will try your suggestion as soon as I can get access
to a floppy as my new computer does not have a floppy drive and I gave away
my old computer about a month ago. I will take it into work Monday, using
computer with 2000 pro about 3 years old and it has a floppy.
Again Thanks.

Interesting idea, but should both IE6 & IE5 be in there? I have a folder
full of IE6 & another full of IE5, if your thinking only one would be
present.

Anything is worth a try, but I don"t know if either will be there because
the person who gave it to me said it had never been updated or on the
internet. He just said it was an old computer he had and was "messing around
in msconfig" and the next time he turned it on it would not boot all the way.
So I don"t know, I wish I had kept my old computer with Win 98SE on it.
Thanks again for your response.

I guess, first, at a DOS Prompt...
C:\>DIR C:setupwbv /a /s
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
SETUPWBV DLL 50,688 08-29-02 12:00a SETUPWBV.DLL
1 file(s) 50,688 bytes
If it doesn't show up for you, you can't do it, anyway. Otherwise... maybe try the IE5 lines he posted...
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx\1]
"ie5"="||rundll32 setupwbv,IE5Maintenance"
[End]
BUT, damn, it doesn't look quite right to me. I just don't know what that "||" is in front of the "rundll32"..!..

Just stating the obvious, Foxfire, but have you tried going in
MSCONFIG and inserting a checkmark in anything that is unchecked ?

Dan
Thanks for the suggestion but I can not even get it to boot past the Win 98
screen and then it just stops
I have tried safe mode and it won't boot to that either. Basically it just
starts to boot and then quits and Win 98 screen freezes and won't do anything
else. Tried scanreg/restore to last good boot and samething.
Thanks for the suggestion.

This URL has a good explanation of the things that happen during the
boot process:
http://users.iafrica.com/c/cq/cquirke/startup.htm
Perhaps you could add debugging lines to various files to determine
where the process is hanging up.
For example, you can get rid of the splash screen by editing your
MSDOS.SYS file in the root directory. Add the line "Logo=0" to the end
of the file.
Secondly, add these lines to the start of your autoexec.bat file:
echo Processing autoexec.bat ...
pause
Add similar lines to winstart.bat in the C:\Windows directory. You may
need to create a new file if it doesn't exist.
echo Processing winstart.bat ...
pause
This point marks the end of the "OS real-mode phase". Next follows the
"OS Windows phase".

At the C:\ prompt, type scanreg /opt /fix and let it run. (scanreg space /opt
space /fix)
Repeat it two more times.
May not help, but ???

Thanks again for all the info. I am going to try it this afternoon.
I questioned the person who gave me the laptop to try to find out anymore
about what he did and he replied he did not remember for sure but he thinks
he unchecked something with mci beside it thinking it had something to do
with MCI Worldcom where the computer was purchased as surplus when they
closed there offices here. I don't know what that had to do with anything, he
is not to computer savvy I guess. But I am not either.
Thanks again for your time and information.

Well, OK, do those DIR, & report back what you find. There may be a way to boot to a Windows DOS box & run one of those.
I wish Myers would show back up & explain why his...
"ie5"="||rundll32 setupwbv,IE5Maintenance"
....looks funny! When I export a similar Registry key in this machine, I don't get that...!...

I want to thank everyone for all the time and suggestions. I have tried
everything even went to a friends house and made the floppys. I have worked
all afternoon and still no joy. I guess this thing will need to be formatted
and reinstall 98SE. I have the installation CD, but the laptop only has
floppy. I'll figure out something because it is a pretty nice little computer
even if it is about 6 or 7 years old.
Again thanks for all suggestions.

You haven't tried everything yet.
Start the machine and immediately press/hold down the ctrl key or continually
tap F8 until the startup menu appears.
Select DOS command prompt and press Enter.
At the prompt, if it is anything other than c:\windows, type each command below
and press Enter:
cd c:\windows
edit win.ini
Use your keyboard up/down arrow keys.
Look for any lines containing MCI. If they have a REM or ; in front of the
line, remove the REM or ;.
If you did any editing, save before exiting.
Press ALT+F, select Exit and press Enter.
At the prompt, type and press Enter:
edit sysedit.ini
Use your keyboard up/down arrow keys.
Look for any lines containing MCI. If they have a REM or ; in front of the
line, remove the REM or ;.
If you did any editing, save before exiting and rebooting.
If nothing appeared out of order, up/down key to the line: Shell=Explorer.exe
Change it to: Shell=msconfig.exe
Press ALT+F, select save and then exit.
Reboot
With any luck it will boot to the desktop with only the msconfig window on the
wallpaper. If it gets to this point, look under the System.ini and Win.ini tabs
for entries containing MCI.
If they are unchecked, recheck them.
May as well look under all tabs for anything unchecked.
Once done click Apply > Ok and reboot back to DOS.
Edit Shell= back to explorer in system.ini, save and reboot.
If still no joy, there may be something between the autoexec.bat and/or
config.sys that is used for Windows that is missing, corrupt or rem'd out.

Correction:
edit sysedit.ini should be edit system.ini

If the changes were made to the system.ini of win.ini, using msconfig, the original
files are in the Windows folder with a .tsh extension.

It could be worth pursuing, but he said in his first post "I tried the scanreg/restore in dos but still nothing." That would normally, you know, cover Win.ini & System.ini too.

Not that I can find. I tested only with system.ini and it remains system.ini
in the Windows folder. By unchecking the entire category MCI system.ini shows
REM; TSHOOT in front of all listed under MCI.

Correct, as would be with .sys and .bat also. The only difference between
disabling selected entries in each using msconfig, or manually REM'ing via text
editor or sysedit, is the added ; and tshoot. I was all over the place editing
and rebooting before posting anything about changing SHELL=, it's been too long
to remember exactly what msconfig.exe did as the shell.

Good point. One thing I've never done is edit in msconfig or a windows text
editor, I've always used DOS or sysedit.
See now, who says you can't teach an old dog a new trick. The problem now is
retaining it.

I finally got into edit system.ini & edit win.ini and removed all of
;rem under mci.
Then dir system.* it shows Directory of C:\Windows it list 5 files
Then dir win* it shows 17 files
I tried to reboot and it still hangs at the same place.
I was not doing everything right is the reason these thing were not showing
before, like leaving out the * and was not C: Windows just C:\>.
I am not used to doing this. It was totally my mistake. I am going back and
do everything again and see what happens.
Should I remove the ;rem in front of everything ?
Again thank you and everyone who has tried to help. I think that I have not
followed directions very well, my mistake.

I'm going to have to recheck what/if anything is missing before the =,
otherwise Tshoot if present should be removed as well as anREM;.
Actually I'd be interested in seeing what is in system.ini for the line
Shell=.

What are the names of all the files for each?

See above.
I'm also interested what shows in the C: directory.
At the prompt:
cd c:\
dir c:\
I'm not one to give up easily, but we may find that a fresh install is the
only possible solution aside from defective hardware, we'll see.

You ask about Shell= in system.ini There is not any Shell=
I removed rem and Tshoot.
I rebooted and it went further and stayed on longer but this time it made it
to just past Win 98 Logo screen but then frooze again but it stayed on about
15 or 20 seconds longer.
If I have too I will do a clean install but I would rather try to work
through this so maybe I can learn something. I have done clean install before
on a computer with a CD drive but never with floopy. The local Computer
Rescue store said they would check the hardware and install Win 98 if
everything is ok for $65. But I learn nothing from that.
I will be out of pocket tomorrow night, Thursday, I am starting a programing
course.
Thank You for the help.

Look at System.ini again, and be *sure* there is no Shell= line (note, that's
just what it starts with.)
Use the same technique to look at Shell.BAD and see if there's a Shell= line.
Should be near the top.
Better yet: Copy those files from the HD to a floppy disk and send them to me at
grystmill@mvps.org. Just System.ini and Win.bad.

I looked again and there is not any Shell= anything. And to be honest I
don"t know how to look at Shell.BAD. or how to copy to floppy since the
computer will not boot.
These DOS commands are all pretty new to me. The only one I knew before
Sunday was scanreg/restore. I am sorry that I can not be more help to you or
myself.
Thank you for trying to help me.

Add "Shell=Explorer.exe" to the [boot] section of System.ini. It is
usually the 3rd line of the file...
[boot]
oemfonts.fon=8514oem.fon
shell=Explorer.exe

LOL! We're both calling it by the wrong name: It's SYSTEM.BAD, not Win.bad or
Shell.bad, <s>. Must be getting nigh dinnertime. Sorry, I should have added the
instructions.
You can look at System.BAD the same way you looked at System.ini:
edit c:\windows\system.bad
The commands for Copy are as follows:
copy c:\windows\system.ini a:\
copy c:\windows\system.bad a:\

Gary
I was able to copy the system.ini to floppy but when I tried to copy
system.bad it copies for a while and then says insufficient disk space. I am
going to have to buy a external floppy drive so I can send you system.ini. Or
I will try to send it from where I work if I can. I don't use a computer a
work but we have some and I'll see what I can do.
We are having a computer show here this week end,we have one every 3rd
Saturday of each month and I can probably get a floppy drive pretty cheap.
Thank you very much for the help. I am sure learning a few things I didn't
know before.

I have been staying out of this thread because there are already more than enough
people involved and I find things often get too confusing when too many people jump
in, and suggestions from one person get mixed up with those of another, often with
bad results. However, I do want to add this comment:
System.bad is *not* a copy of the system.ini file. System.bad is going to be a
*huge* file, as it is a copy of System.dat (part of the Registry), and may be as
much as 10MB or more.....not something that will fit on a floppy, and not a file
that you are going to be able to "read" in any kind of text editor.
The likely reason for scanreg /fix having failed for you is that with a System.dat
file over about 9MB in size, scanreg /fix usually cannot complete. it is a "bug" or
limitation of the /fix option in that program.

Never mind. It's not what I thought it was. Sounds like a copy of System.dat,
which is part of the Registry. (System.001 is also a backup of System.dat, made
right after installation.)
Just send me the System.ini, though at this point, reinstalling over the top, or
the nuclear option, are looking pretty good.

Is this correct? I don't see it on any of my 98SE machines and info I find on
restoring the system.ini or win.ini:
<quote>
cd\windows <press enter>
ren system.ini system.ch <press enter>
If after attempting to rename the system.ini you receive File not found,
continue to follow the below steps.
ren system.--- system.ini <press enter>
If after attempting to type the above command you receive file not found, follow
the below instructions. If you do not receive a message your system.ini should
be restored to its original state.
dir system.*
If you see a file other than system.ch such as system.bak or system.000, follow
the above instructions but replace the --- with the appropriate extension on
your computer.
</quote>
I agree it's looking mighty near to a fresh install due to who knows what's
been corrupted.

Let's see if you have the install files on the disk. At the prompt, if not
already c:\windows>, type:
cd c:\windows
Is there a folder listed as either Precopy or Options? If so at the prompt
type:
cd c:\windows\precopy
Is there anything in the precopy? If so, what?
cd c:\windows\options
Is there anything or a folder named CABS in the options folder?
If there is a Cabs folder type:
cd c:\windows\options\cabs
Are there many .cab files, many which are named win98_##.cab? ## = actual
numbers, i.e.: win98_23.cab.
If the cab files are present then you could try an overinstall to see if we can
at the least get 98 to run. I do however suggest a fresh install which would be
clean of any corruption that may be present that an overinstall won't truly fix.
If it comes down to reinstalling one way or another, make sure you have the
Product Key which can be pulled from the registry before doing anything towards
an install.
Boot with a startup floppy or to a command prompt and run either of these:
C:\Windows\command\Find /I “ProductKey†c:\windows\system.dat
C:\Windows\command\Find /I “ProductKey†c:\system.1st

You're right, I'm wrong. The first backup of System.dat is System.1st, not
System.001. I wonder how big OP's System.001 is.

As an alternative, start the Thinkpad in "Command Prompt", type
"dir /s c:\mini.cab" and press "Enter". If the file exists, type in
the drive and path of the directory, add "setup.exe" and press "Enter".
For example, if "Directory of C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS" is
displayed, type in
c:\windows\options\cabs\setup.exe
and press "Enter". Then try reinstalling Windows.

FYI
I have 13 *system.---* files in C:\Windows and 7 of them are around the size
of the system.ini file (3-4kb).
None have an extension such as .001 or .bak.
The smaller 7 are .ini, .syd, .pss, .in_, .ipe, .unv and .cb .
I have Win98SE.
The other 6 are much larger, the size of a system.dat file.
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion (More info?)
Too bad. Well, it could be worth a try to find a backup of System.ini &
possibly Win.ini to restore as Brian A. has posted. I know you have
tried "Scanreg /Restore", & it didn't work, though. That normally will
also restore those two files. Stick with Brian A. on all that or with
Terhune. Anyway, I think all you have to try with is System.001 &
Win.001. So...
REN System.ini System.iniX
REN System.001 System.ini
REN Win.ini Win.iniX
REN Win.001 Win.ini
Can you reboot to Windows?
I do know you have Windows Installation .cab's on the hard drive . You
posted elsewhere...
......Quote...........
| I have tried all of those the only one that I get anything on is:
| DIR /a /s C:Win98*.cab
| and it shows 48 files not the 55 yours show
......EOQ.............
The folder that contains them-- what was it?-- should also contain
"Setup.exe". That can be used to install Windows, but I'll step back &
let others talk you through it.

I wonder as well. A last resort may be to restore both win.ini and system.ini
by renaming and then renaming the .001's.

I have a fairly fresh install of Win98SE on a VirtualPC. Windows shows 3
system. files and 2 win. files.
system.cb
system.dat
system.ini
win.com
win.ini
system.cb appears to be a bare-bones system.ini
I believe your 6 of 7 are system.ini. Open them in notepad to see the
differences if any. System.ini is basically used for drivers.

PCR, do you really have a system.001 or a win.001? I thought that was in Win95
and not 98SE.

Could be you are right. That is why I repeatedly defer to others in this
thread. It is also true he is FE, not the SE I am. I have the following.
System.000 is an old System.ini, all right, but I see there is no
Win.000...
C:\>dir c:\windows\system.??? /a /od
Directory of C:\WINDOWS
SYSTEM 000 1,888 11-15-99 2:27p SYSTEM.00
SYSTEM BAK 2,245 12-10-01 2:19p system.BA
SYSTEM PSS 2,395 06-27-03 2:16a SYSTEM.PS
SYSTEM SYD 2,255 04-27-05 10:22p SYSTEM.SY
SYSTEM INI 2,413 09-15-05 5:41p SYSTEM.IN
....snip...
6 file(s) 5,454,812 bytes
0 dir(s) 6,765.50 MB free
C:\>dir c:\windows\win.??? /a /od
Directory of C:\WINDOWS
....snip...
WIN SYD 9,097 06-04-03 11:12p WIN.SYD
WIN PSS 8,299 06-27-03 2:16a WIN.PSS
WIN INI 8,343 07-13-05 6:17p WIN.INI
4 file(s) 50,530 bytes
Anyhow, my RENs won't work as posted, unless he gets into the Windows
folder.
