Can't Delete Entry In Msconfig StartUp Tab

I'm running Win98 SE. I installed Adobe Acrobat 5.0 but unchecked the
Acrobat Assistant (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 1.0\Distillr\Acrotray.exe)
from the startup group. It was unchecked on the msconfig startup tab.
However, the filepath in the Adobe folder is C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat
5.0Distillr\Acrotray.exe. I then uninstalled Adobe but the Acrobat Assistant
unchecked entry was still in the msconfig startup tab.

I checked HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run (and Run-) but
the Adobe entry isn't listed in the right pane. Did the same thing with HKLM
and checked all run keys but again no entry. Also checked
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools and again nothing.

I tried putting a check mark next to the Adobe box in the msconfig startup
tab and rebooting but still no luck. I reinstalled Adobe Acrobat 5.0 and
left the Assistant in the startup group and there was still no registy
entry. I moved it out of the startup group so that it was unchecked in the
msconfig startup tab and again, no registry. Also doesn't show on a HiJack

I haven't found anything on this in the MSKB, Adobe KB, or on Google. Can
someone help me with this? How can there be a msconfig startup tab entry
without a corresponding registry entry? It's like this is a phantom entry.
Where else in the registry could I look for this file?

Two places are referred to by the Startup tab in MSCONFIG that aren't Registry
entries.
1. The Startup folder in ...Start\Programs\. When disabled, these entries are
moved to ...Start\Programs\Disabled Startup Items folder (which disappears if
there are no disabled Startup items.)

2. Run= and Load= lines in Win.ini file. These are REMmed out when disabled.

On Registry location you don't mention checking is the HKLM\......\RunServices
key, right below the HKLM\.......\Run key.

Hint: When you uninstall an application that has an entry or entries in the
Startup tab of MSCONFIG, first re-enable the item(s) in MSCONFIG and Apply (or
click OK) but DO NOT restart when prompted. The pertinent commands in the
Registry or elsewhere will then be restored to their proper locations, where the
uninstaller can find them.

Hint 2: To see where the Startup commands referred to by MSCONFIG Startup tab
are located, use MSINFO32. Expand Software Environment, click on Startup
Programs.The notations are:

Per-User Run (HKCU\....\Run)
Machine Run (HKLM\....\Run)
Machine Service (HKLM\...\RunServices)
Startup Group (Start\Programs\Startup folder)
(I forget the exact format of the Win.ini entries.)

Try using "find" in the entire registry on acrotray.
Collapse all.
Click once on My Computer.
Press F5 to refresh.
Press CTRL+F to open the find window.
Type in acrotray.
Select look in keys, values, data and press Enter.
Look closely at each result find stops at.
To resume find press F3.

In addition to what Gary and Emrys have already posted, have you done a search of
the Registry, using the Find menu in the Registry Editor?

Click Start> Run, type regedit and click OK.
Click the Edit menu> Find, type in the box: Acrobat Assistant and check all the
'Look In' boxes. When ot fonds an entry, press F3 to search for the next entry,
until you find what registry entry contains the info you are looking for.

You need to check the box in msconfig-startup otherwise it will not show
in the registry.

You will find an indication of where an item starts from Msinfo32,
rather than Msconfig.

Items must be checked in Msconfig to show in Msinfo32.

Start-Run-msinfo32
Click the + beside Software Environment to expand.
Click Startup Programs
Ctrl+A to Select All, Ctrl+C to Copy.
Paste that information in your message (or just the relevant part if
you cannot determine the startup location)

Per Gary's advice, I was able to track down the file location via msinfo32.
