Found an awesome deal in the UK for a X1800XT for 170 pounds so about 250 US dollars. The cheapest I can find any 7900GT's for is around 200 pounds so around 300+ US dollars. If these cards perform relatively like for like I am right to think that I should try and snap up the X1800XT as soon as I can and get round to building my system.

Just in case in makes a difference the system I am looking to build is: Antec P150 case, Antec NeoHE 430W(this comes free with the case), Asus A8N-E Mobo, 2 x 1 gig OCZ plat ram 2-3-2-5, 1 x 250 Gb WD SE16.

Thanks for any advice you guys can give as I am hoping ot place order this week

Stock performance the X1800XT >= 7900GT IMO. I think of the factory OC'ed 7900GT's (EVGA CO models, etc.) as being equal to a X1800XT. BUT, it totally depends on the games you play. For instance, Oblivion, the X1800XT is clearly better. Chronicles of Riddick, the 7900GT wins. Both are great cards so you really can't lose unless you buy the wrong card for your game. But if the X1800XT is cheaper my vote is X1800XT if you are running MS Windows. If running Linux, grab the 7900GT.

I just upgraded from a EVGA 7800GT CO (factory overclocked) to a X1800XT just for Oblivion. The difference is huge. (I have not tried any other games to compare the two cards.) I installed the chuck patch last night and spent a few hours playing Oblivion with HDR and 4X FSAA both at once (NV can not do that with OpenEXR HDR) and still had much higher fps than the 7800GT had with no FSAA and slightly lower detail levels even.

you have to be careful when looking at becnhmarks comparing x1800XTs and 7900GT, most benchmarks for the ATI cards are for the 512MB version, not the 256MB one which is the one i think you will have seen for under 200 quid. as far as oblivion goes i play with full settings on my 7900GT on oblivion no probs at all 1280x1024 res. The biggest draw back of the 7900GT is HDR and antialiasing will not work together but with the ATI card it does

There's little difference between 256mb and 512mb version. Some games benefit from more VRAM, but in most cases, they perform similar.

You can't go wrong with either 7900GT or X1800XT. Both win their share of benchmarks.

Agreed. 512MB will only make a difference in resolutions of 1600x1200 in general and in my opinion. Most people who are playing on an LCD monitor are typcially limited to 1280x1024 resolution. Under those circumstances the extra 256mb is marginal at best. While the extra RAM may come in handy down the road as texture quality and sizes increase, it will probably not have any impact right now.
