Computer only has PCI slots, so I need some help in picking out which would be better? Nvidia FX5500 or ATI 9250? I know that PCI sucks for PC gaming, but thats all I have.....And I don't feel like upgradeing my mobo at this time. I am just looking to do a simple video card uprade.

technically they are pretty much the same thing, so i would go for the cheaper... actually, i'm more ati prone. Make sure you dont get the 64-bit version of these cards.

by the way, you are upgrading from what card? on-board?

I concur here, but I will add that if you ever plan on perhaps trying out some form of open-source operating system, go with nVidia.
Much much better driver support, but then again if you don't plan on it, the point's moot.

I Was posed with this same issue while i was searching for a card. I went with the fx5500 because of the higher clock speeds and the ease of overclocking.
i can play bf2 on the VERY lowest settings, and manage 20-25 fps, ino its sad, but still a great game.

as i told someone before, the fx5500 performs it's moneys worth. i have it, and im happy simply because i can play most games at low at 800*600. i dont have an agp slot either, and i dont have an extra 150$ for the 6200. wat can i say, crazy overclocker(345/515), moneys worth performance.
i got pny btw

I fail to see how any games now will work on a pci, doom 3 wont bf2 wont
cod2 wont, you need a agp card or pci x or e, for all these games nomatter what you say any point 1fps at low setting is rotten. You will be able to play ut doom and any other game that is in the 90 ish year.

not so long ago i had a FX5200 64bit and i could play every 2 year-ago game... low to mid settings, but i could.
i dont see any problem with a higher spec'ed card, 128 bit memory running today's games on low settings....

Thanks for all the info and replies guys. I think I am going with the BFG 3DFuzion Nvidia FX5500. What swayed me the most was the faster core speed on the Nvidia than ATI. Also I think that the FX5500 is DirectX 9 compared to ATI 9250 which is only DirectX 8.

Im using a BFG ive got mine at 317/443. i had it at 333/450 for a while but got really bad artifacts a couple days later.

I REALLY doubt there is a pci version of the 6200, never seen one, and i looked for a long time.

Can you send me a link of it?

I can pwn in bf2 even at low settings with 20-25fps. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 1 GIG OF RAM IF YOU PLAN TO PLAY BF@ WITH THIS CARD. Otherwise, after the map loads, you will have a major lag problem as it uses the HDD. I would recommend getting a sound card too, when i crash into walls at night, i get 10 fps, because there is more detailed sound.

I sorry for saying this but I dont beleive a pci card will play bf2 an error comes up saying no agp card found 25 fps is on a pci card, never in a life time. you would have to prove this for me to ever beleive just saying a pci card will play high end games is false and specially if someone listened to this and bought it and could'nt play what you say they would be pissed off. lier lier pants on fire.

Well I got my card today. Installed it they way I was supppose to. Now I have a very strange problem. When I turn my computer on all I get is a black screen. It takes about 40 seconds for my screen to turn on after I push the power button???? What could be causing this? Is my power supply to under to underpowered for my card?

hmmm no, it probably has nothing to do with your psu.

it's probably related to that 'init display first' option at your bios. You'll choose which video card will display first. Now that you have PCI one, you should set it to pci. It's probably set to AGP or onboard AGP, then the bios will initialize first the agp card, then your pci... that's why it takes a while to your monitor to come up

you'll probably have to hit 'Del' or any other key (F1, F2, F10), but probably 'Del'. Then look into the bios menus and look for some option like that i said. It depends on your system, so i cant tell you exactly. But if you want, you dont have to change it at all. It will just take a while for your screen to come up, but it doesnt cause any problem

Yet another problem that I have ran in to. There is a password that I must enter to access my bios. Does anyone know what the password for the bios is on a HP Pavilion 533w?

Although its too late, I'll throw my vote now. I would have gone with the 9200/9250. Although the 5200/5500 cards are DX9, they are much to slow to use the DX9 render path in any game that require it. And once your on DX8, the 92X0 card is faster.
As for your bios option, it is whatever you told it to be, there isn't a password for the bios shipped in any computer I've worked on. If you've forgotten it, just reset the bios and it will forget. (either remove the battery and reinstall it, or short the jumper that resets it.)

The 6200 PCI is the only realistic option if you hope to play something current at moderate settings. BFG, Fusion 3D and Best Data are the only options I've seen. The 5700LE PCI mentioned earlier is itself only 64-bit (expensive given its features) and any decent 5200 or 5500 128 card will be better overall (and cheaper).

The ATi 9250 is still viable as a DX8 card and are 128-bit PCI versions out there. You just have to read the box info carefully. I keep an old PCI system around for legacy issues. It's fun to see what works with newer games and what won't. I doubt very much you will see any "new" PCI card from either Nvidia or ATi. This interface is really and trully dead for video options.
