I am looking at buying a beast of a laptop and am willing to spend some loot, but I am having trouble with the decision of getting a laptop with 2 7800gtx's (256 MB each) in SLI or one 7900GTX @ 512 MB and also is Dell the only one with the 7900 GTX or are there any other reccomended retailers I should check out?

If you haven't already, you might want to check out this article:

I can't really answer your question but if you read the last page of the article, it sounds like Tomshardware is going to be testing some SLI laptops pretty soon so you might want to wait just a little while and see what happens.

If you're not worried about battery life in the least, and don't care about having a nut toaster, then the SLi will give you the best performance for 'money no object'.

There will be many times when the difference isn't much and will favour the single card, but for the majority of major games out there the SLi solution will be noticeably faster, and also give you access to features a single solution can't (higher level of AA).

But really this is only as a 'money no object' transportable desktop replacement pc, calling this thing either a notebook or laptop would be incredibly over-optimistic, or just plain unrealistic.

Yeah, I think it is probably a waste of money to buy an SLI notebook. If you want a fast gaming notebook an XPS should be enough. I have an Inspiron 9300 with a 6800Go and this thing is fast enough for me. I think the CPU is holding me back more than anything since it is just a 1.6GHz PentiumM.

But it's not about whether it's a waste of money or not, likely anything with an XPS moniker on it is also a waste of money, better of with a 9400 or E1705 with a GF7900 added to it, however it's not about a 'fast' gaming notebook, the fastest is the SLi, and if he's "willin to spend some loot" then that's it.

Heck I'd say the Eurocomm is the best because it also has 19" LCD monitor, but depends on what he's looking at, I'd personally wait for the dual core Turions to come out in a few weeks (unfortunately the Merom won't be out for a few months).

Thanks for the input, and I do not intend to ever use this "monster" when it is not on my desk at school or at home. I know battery life will be almost nil but that is not why I am buying it. The news about dual core Turion though may make me wait a while and see what happens.

Yeah I kinda suspected you were loking for a tansportable in a nice tight package.

The DualCore Turion is worth waiting for IMO since it's only a few weeks away, too bad about the Meroms, since that's too long a wait (but fortunately for me just about the time everything else is coming together for my next laptop (Merom + X1700 class graphics + pontential HDCP + potential HD-DVD/BR solutions) so Fall is the right time for me.

Also if you can wait those few weeks you should see far more GF7900s in the system, and maybe even some SLi'ed GF7900s too.

As has just happened alienware now has sli laptops, so I think I am going to wait for them to be reviewed and then make a choice

I thought they always had them (same with Voodoo), but then again I've never been interested in SLi, because I'm the opposite of your needs, I like good gaming, but value battery and heat issues. Not better/worse, just different needs.

Good luck, hope they got the right solution for you, hope the Turion's also worth the wait.
