How to remove arrows over shortcuts?

When I create desktop shortcuts, the icon is always partially covered with
an arrow in a box.

It's annoying as it covers the icon and doesn't seem to serve any purpose --
just more useless boffin stuff Microsoft loves.

Is there some way of seeing my desktop icons without having them smothered
by little arrows?

I would greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks.
Sam.

Download and install TweakUI:

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP (TweakUI)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

After installing, go to Start > Programs > PowerToys for Windows XP >
TweakUI. Expand "Explorer" and check "None" for Shortcut Overlay.

To remove shortcut arrows. Go>start\run and type in regedt32 and click ok or
hit enter on your keyboard. Now navigate the following route clicking the +
symbol in the following order. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile and click lnkfile to
highlight it and then in the right window click on IsShortCut and click
delete. Now do the same in piffile and InternetShortcut close out and reboot
and you should be good to go.
