Recently, the fan cooling the Northbridge on my Chaintech Vnf4-ultra mobo began making a terrible racket on boot-up. Although it seems to be working fine, I'm worried that it'll conk out on me at some point in the near future. Does anyone have any experience installing a passive cooler on this brand of motherboard? Any advice is welcome.

Yes those northbridge fans are not that reliable as with two motherboards that I own did the same and got bad in just a matter of months. So I replaced it with a better n/b hsf and the other one with water cooling. It is very important to cool your n/b as it is the link to the cpu, ram and pci-e device, for if it is hot then it affects the system's stablility. That is why in overclocking it is paramount to keep the n/b temps at lower side to achieve a stable system.

There are many n/b cooler you can purchase to replaced your detrimental hsf. It may require you to remove your motherboard during installation but it is very easy to do so. Most of n/b coolers are just snap on spring loaded fasteners or just a screw and nut, and they would only require to place a thermal compound and then the hsf installation.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I should have been more specific; I know that there are passive chipset cooling options out there (the Zalman one looks particularly interesting), and I'm wondering if anyone with the Chaintech VNF4-Ultra has had any difficulties installing one. That particular board is a bit cramped, and I'd like to be sure its feasable before I lay down the cash. Keep 'em coming!

"Thermalright HR-05 Chipset Cooler" quite a large passive NB cooler. Just as good if not better than the blue zalman thing.... but because of its size (both hight and width) it may be not be compatible with say a Zalman 7700.

Cool; I think I'll go for it. Worst case scenario: I'm out $10 or so. Well, the absolute worst would be me irreparably damaging my chipset, but let not go there :)
