Hi,

I just reinstalled windows XP on my computer. It did not delete the program
files folder or anything within, which is fine. However, all the links to
the programs from the Start -> All Programs menu have disappeared. How do I
add them back? e.g. I can browse to c:/program files/leechftp/leechftp.exe
and start the program. But I want to add the link to this under All Programs
in the Start menu. How can I achieve this?

Thanks.

You could try just dragging the exe file (with right mouse button) to the
start menu->all programs and create a shortcut there.

Hi,

Thanks! It worked great. Now to take it one step further, how can I create a
folder under All Programs? e.g. I want a folder saying Macromedia, so when I
point my mouse over it a pop-up appears listing all my Macromedia programs?

Hi, Asad.

Next time you need to reinstall WinXP, you might want to do an "in-place
upgrade", as described in this KB article:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

This is not intended as a shortcut for reinstalling WinXP itself, but it
should preserve your existing applications and data - and most of your
tweaks. You will, of course, want to visit Windows Update as soon as you
get your firewall and antivirus back in place to be sure that you are
practicing "safe hex".

Some of your existing applications can be run simply by clicking on their
executable files, as you know. Others, though, need to be "installed" so
that they can make their required entries in your Registry. These can't be
restored to function by simply dragging them back to the Start menu. For
these, you'll have to go through the install or setup process again, even if
the files are still on your hard drive, unless you use the in-place upgrade.
