Ok, so i have a budget around $1,000.

I currently have:

CPU: AMD XP 2500+
MEMORY: 1GB PC3200
HDD: 2 x WD 320GB
GPU: Nvidia 6600GT 128MB
SOUND: Creative X-FI

So obviously, i need new mobo, new cpu, new gpu, new psu and more memory.
I don't intend to do any overclocking, just some light gaming and be able to handle all my apps i throw at it.

Here is what i was thinking:

ALL PRICES FROM NEWEGG,

CPU: AMD X2 3800+ -$297
MOBO: DFI nF4 SLI Infinity $109.99
MEMORY: Corsair ValueSelect 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 $154
GPU: Leadtek PX7900GT Extreme $299
PSU: Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 $89.99

TOTAL: $972.51 w/SHIPPING

That setup will definitely be a good jump up from what you have. The only thing I would say is you might not get a mother with SLI unless you plan on using it in the near future.

I'd honestly just wait the two more months until you can acquire a Conroe 2.4G/4M cache dual core processor ($300-ish) and compatible mainboard that will more than be a match for an FX60 or yet to be released AM2/FX62...or FX64.

Couple that with 2gb of DDR2/667 and a 7900GT, and you'd be set for two years...(or until the first "requires Directx 10.0/Vista" game hits the streets, MS games excluded)

(Although what you have picked out would run just fine for 18 months too!)

my suggestion is to wait a little my friend....maybe few months ...the new amd platform will be here.........the prices will drop.........maybe conroe...this is the perfect time to wait just a little.....

the jump from your old sistem and your new sistem is not much.....you`ll only notice a small improvement...don`t get me wrong...it`s ok ...but not a big jump

That is a good upgrade, and I have to agree the old system is definitely no slouch - if you have no plans for the old parts build it up with a crappy case and cheap psu like

Coolmax CV-560-GRAY Mid Tower $20 shipped @ zzf
SPARKLE ATX-350PN-B204 ATX 12V 2.0 350W $34 shipped @ ewiz

then make your friends use it for lan games and frag 'em
