Looking for some advice...

I will need to refill my Lexmark #17 cartridge soon but have a couple
questions:

1) The #17 cartridge has less ink than the #16 model, but is that because it
is filled with less ink but in the same sized cartridge/tank?
2) If the above is true, wouldn't that mean telling the Lexmark printer
program that you now have a #16 cartridge installed once you refill the #17?
