I just installed 1 stick of 1gb of Crucial PC3200. I know this laptop is normally a PC2700 computer but thought I had read reviews about using PC3200 in it.
CPUZ reports that the frequency of the memory is 159.2mhz and the mem timings are 3-3-3-8. According to the speed table, these timings are for 200mhz. Is this stick running at 200mhz or is it at the 159.2mhz as reported?
I'm not using either of the 256mb PC2700 chips that came with the computer. If the PC3200 ram is going to run at only 166mhz, then I will likely add 1 on the 256mb chips into the 2nd slot.
What CPU does it have (too lazy to look it up)? Most likely it is running at 166mhz (or 160 via CPUZ), not 200. You may (but it's a Compaq, so its probably not) be able to change that in the BIOS setup.
That's what I figured. It has a Semprom 3000+. I put in one of the original 256mb sticks with the 1gb 3200 stick and it still runs at 160mhz according to CPU-Z.
Oh well, no big deal. The bios definitely doesn't allow you to change the mem frequency. I didn't buy this notebook with the idea of being able to tweak much performance out of it anyhow.
Next upgrade is a 7200rpm drive from the 4200rpm drive.
