BEWARE, LONG POST.
righto... summary of problem.
while playing unrealtournament (UT) it occasionally slows down to almost a complete stop. hard disk access is constant.
one time i managed to get back to the desktop and open task manager.
suprise! UT was using a whopping 780+ MB of ram... and it was increasing every second.
also... my need for speed 5 does this everytime i try to start it up. i never get by the startup screen. just constant swapfile use.
and no way am i out of ram. or even close.

system specs:
athlon 1200C
asus a7v133
512MB of PC150 Kingmax SDRAM
tnt2 pro graphics card
SB live player
52x CD
40gig ibm 60GXP as primary master (not on promise controller)
16.8gig ibm 16.8GP backup drive primary slave
12x ricoh burner
netcom 56k modem.

software:
latest bois (1005a)
win 2k pro
sp2
Via 4in1 4.32
detonator 12.40 drivers
latest sb drivers
system setup as APCI (ACPI?)
512MB system ram with 512-1024MB swap file allocated to primary 6gig partition (2.7 gig free)

i had been using RAMidle a week earlier, but that had given me grief so i had disabled it AND removed it from startup.

only other thing running was SETI@home in the background.
total ram usage (not including UT) about 100 meg.
UT ram usage after i closed UT down and restarted ~ 128mb.

WHAT THE HELL would cause UT to suddenly go nuts and use soooo much ram, physical and swap file???
it was running for about 10-15 minutes quite happily till it just went CHUG.
ive had this problem now 3 times with UT (the other two i had to reboot)
with need for speed 5 it happens every time. regardless of what else is running.

Are you using a fixed swap file size ? Your NFS memory problem could really be caused by this. To fix its size, simply put the same value for min and max. Not sure if this will work for UT though...

well, if anything it will be easy to implement.

my swap file is designated as being 512mb - 1024mb.
i will set it to 1024 - 1024 and see what happens.

Try the UT Tweak(at the bottom of the page) and adjust settings there:

You can find more help in the 3Dspotlight tweak guide:

Or Tweak3D's guide:

i believe i have fixed the problem. done some major changes and the problems dont seem to be there.

sluggish mouse control in UT is also gone :)

i got a new geforce2pro card, replace the old tnt2pro clunker that i dont think really liked working at 75mhz AGP bus speed (was responsible for other problems ive had)

also ditched directx8.0 and the unofficial 12.40 detonators.
put in the 8.1 ver of directx and the OFFICIAL 12.41 detonator drivers.

so in hindsight i suspect it was a problem with directx8. ill be sure to keep you updated should anything else nasty happens.

p.s. changing the cache had zero effect.

DirectX 8.1, where did I find it ?

Happy to hear that your problems were solved with your new card. I'd really like to solve mine (refer to Last Resort under Graphics Cards)

directx 8.1
try here

this is the win2k version. the 9x version is also around on the same site, as are the 12.41 Certified detonator drivers :)

UPDATE #3:
the crummy graphics card i ripped out of my system a few days back i put into my older system im constructing to sell to a friend.
and guess what?
power it up and
BEEEEEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
thats right. the card is buggered
im always careful removing & insterting cards, careful to ground myself at all times on the chassy yet somehow between removing the card, storing it in an anti-static pag for a day and putting it into the old one it died.
*grumbles: piece a worthless s-h-i-t-e*
im not going to get a gigabyte again anytime soon.
that card has been nothing but trouble.
there is a remote chance it may be the agp port on that computer but i doubt it. will still test it on another working system later this week.
