I am kind of new to the newsgroup thing, so sorry if I am in the wrong
place. I have a question about Pocket PCs. I have come across a peice of
software (MS Streets 2005) for Pocket PCs that I think could be benificial
in my business, however I am somewhat confused by the system requirements.
It states that it needs a Windows CE 3.0 or later, along with other
requirements. My PPC meets the other requirements but I have never heard of
Windows CE. My PPC states its "Microsoft(R) Pocket PC Version 3.0.11171.
I've assumed that it is simular to Windows Pocket PC 2002. I have
downloaded items for 2002 and they have ran fine. But anyway, How does
windows CE fit in to the order of Pocket PC Operating Systems, is it the
latest OS? What is Windows CE, and/or what can it do that mine cannot, was
it designed for a different type of user? What benifits would I gain to
move to a device that had Windows CE? I appreciate any information, or
direction to, that anybody can offer, thank you.

Simple answer really. Windows CE is the core operating system on which the
Pocket PC platform is built. PPC2000 and 2002 were built on top of WinCE
3.x. The current PPCs that run WM2003 are built on WinCE 4.x.
You will be fine with the latest version of Pocket Streets as far as running
is concerned. You should be aware that it has very limited functionality
though, commensurate with the price. Hopefully you are considering buying a
copy of MS Streets and Trips which comes with a copy of Pocket Streets, and
not the stand alone version. You will undoubtedly be pleased with S&T and
not feel you wasted your money.
Pocket Streets is a great electronic map, with a good user interface, lots
of points of interest, and excellent find capabilities. Coupled with a GPS
it will even tell you where you are, given you have the map loaded. That's
about where it ends though. It does not produce routes, can't even download
those built in S&T. It therefore does not provide directions, re-routing,
etc...all those things most folks expect of a PPC mapping program these
days.
Please make sure your needs can be met by what Pocket Streets delivers, and
it may, or we will see you back here angry, or wondering if you just aren't
figuring out how to do something. Chances are it doesn't do that.

So what would you reccomend for the program of choice if I wanted the kind
of functionality I get from my laptop.
That is: I want to enter start point waypoint and endpoint and have it
route, then if I dont like it, change the order and have it reroute.
I want the GPS to interact with it so I can see my location, upcoming turns
and such...
