Hello,
I need some help please.
I am building a new pc. Soyo mainboard 4vgm 1.0, 512 mb pc3200 DDR, 60gig
WD hd, Cdrw, DVD, etc....
I bought and installed a 7 in 1 card reader. After installing Win XP, it
recognized the reader as 4 seperate drives (removable disks) with indiv.
drive letters. After installing all the updates from MS update site
including SP1, Windows XP recognized the drives as designated readers and
gave them a different icon with the designated label for what type of media
they took (CF, SM, MS, MMS/SD).
Then I installed SP2 and my system crashed. I worked with a MS tech support
person "Shawn Ling" for about three weeks to undo SP2 and ultimately
re-installed, re- formatted, 3 or 4 times and each time it crashed with SP2.
The MS support person ditched me and will not return my e-mails anymore so I
am on my own. I have now re installed XP with all updates including SP1 and
will not be installing SP2. My problem is that now after all this.... I lost
the designations specific to the removable media drives. They show up as
generic removable disks. Every where I look nothing exists to enable the
drives to show those icon labels. I have been in and out if device mgr, and
every where on this site for info and I am blanking out.
If anyone knows the answer to this specific problem please HELP.

Thanks Much,

James

As I understand it... You can give a label to the drive letter but if
you add or remove a drive the label stays with that drive letter. If you
insert media in the drive the label of that media will show but not all
media has been labeled.
You can label the drive by right click on drive in My Computer and
choose rename. You can label media when you create it usually or by
choosing properties of drive with media inserted (no sure is your camera
will like this). Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply TonyS,
Actually the drive labels I am referring to are issued by Windows XP and
look like icons (like when XP recognizes your DVD drive) it puts a black
label across the picture of the drive and carries the respective label for
the drive type in my case each drive used to have a black label with CF/MD,
MS, SM, MMC/SD, I am familiar with renaming drives and reassigning drive
letters, these were more like icons.
Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Thanks,

James

See if your device is listed in usbstor.inf or search the brand name of
the device. If it listed before XP must have the info somewhere. I have
Lexarmedia multi-reader (4 generic drives) so I to would like an easy
install.

TonyS... Thanks again for the reply
It was not listed in the .inf file which led me to the final solution. I
started looking at the install disk a little closer... it had its own device
listing in its install inf file. It says no drivers needed for winXP but I
looked at all the directories and "Bingo"
I found a driver on the install disk that made some reference to color
icons. I changed drivers and unplugged then replugged in the USB device and
it changed all to drive icons specific to what type of media they take.
Thanks dude ... I would'nt have looked at it again (install disk) had you
not mentioned the inf file.

Much Appreciated :)
