Core Launch Date Announced with Woodcrest

Well, after months of waiting, we only have another month to go. Motherboard makers have leaked the launch date of Woodcrest to be June 19, 2006. What's more Intel seems to be trying to take measures to avoid a paper launch by dictating to channels to have the official delivery date no later than June 25, 2006. Given that Woodcrest is a server chip it's doubtful that the average customer will see these chips in store on that date, but hopefully we'll have legitimate reviews out by that time. Launch models range from 1.6GHz with 2MB of L2 cache to 3Ghz with 4MB of L2 cache. The price range goes from $209 to $851. A Low Voltage chip is also going to be available at 2.33GHz with 4MB of L2 cache and the same 1333MHz FSB with a 40W TDP.

I thought I would just post an update.

For those who are concerned that Woodcrest and the rest of the Core architecture is coming to market too soon and will have teething problems, they can be rest assured that that is not the case.

What I mean by better is almost bug free, runs faster than expected, and takes less power. The bug-free bit enabled a pull-in of the launch dates, if you don't need another stepping, you don't need another stepping.

Seems like Woodcrest runs so well, that they don't even need to due another stepping which is why the launch date was pulled forward to June 19th.

What is even more significant is that the TDP rating has reportedly dropped from 80W to the 65W of Conroe.

The last part, less power, is the big one. I am told Woodcrest will be coming in with a 65W TDP. This is big news, and by no means a minor drop, it is on the order of 20%, and will most likely send AMD scrambling. Whatever magic Intel pulled off, well done.

This of course means that Intel was able to squeeze a 3GHz, 1333MHz FSB Woodcrest into the TDP rating of a 2.67GHz 1066Mhz FSB Conroe. Hopefully, the Conroe Extreme Edition sees a similar drop in TDP. This is quite an unexpected, but pleasant response to AMD's Socket F July launch announcement.

Hopefully, they'll drop the LV Woodcrest's TDP down to Merom's 35W and Merom's down to Yonah's 31W. It's probably better for them to keep it at 40W though since a 5W difference isn't that significant and it'll allow them to release a 2.67GHz Woodcrest LV that much sooner. In regards to Woodcrest's original 80W TDP, I always thought Intel left themselves a lot of breathing room. The thing with a 65W TDP for Woodcrest, even if their stepping is very good I don't think they've left themselves much clocking room. I guess it really doesn't matter though since they'll probably only release 1 more 65nm Woodcrest at 3.33GHz before transitioning to Cloverton which will probably have it's own TDP. After Cloverton, 45nm will be here to let them clock higher at the same TDP again.

As Action_Man said, Conroe is for desktop and will be available in July and Merom is for notebooks and will be available in August. I'm planning on getting a labtop in that time frame as well so I'm hoping Merom comes out on schedule. Theoretically adoption should be pretty quick since Merom is a drop in replacement for the current Yonah based Core Duo chips soo notebook makers don't even need to redesign anything. Still, old stock needs to be cleared (which may be a good deal depending on your needs) so I wouldn't expect a decent selection of Merom labtops until September.
