Well, after months of waiting, we only have another month to go. Motherboard makers have leaked the launch date of Woodcrest to be June 19, 2006. What's more Intel seems to be trying to take measures to avoid a paper launch by dictating to channels to have the official delivery date no later than June 25, 2006. Given that Woodcrest is a server chip it's doubtful that the average customer will see these chips in store on that date, but hopefully we'll have legitimate reviews out by that time. Launch models range from 1.6GHz with 2MB of L2 cache to 3Ghz with 4MB of L2 cache. The price range goes from $209 to $851. A Low Voltage chip is also going to be available at 2.33GHz with 4MB of L2 cache and the same 1333MHz FSB with a 40W TDP.

In case anyones wondering, the Cedar Mill based Celeron Ds with 512k L2 cache and clock speeds up to 3.33GHz are going to be launched May 28 and have been shown to be great overclockers. It be fun to see the performance difference between a 3.33GHz 356 Celeron D and a 3.33Ghz Conroe Extreme Edition.

June 19th 2006, I predict record amount of heart attacks and suicides.

Seriously though good news for Intel.

One thing I worrie about when any company release something to soon they have problems. Everything to New drugs to toys and computer hardware and chips.

Woohoo!!!

Real benchmarks to come within a month, hopefully.
May 15, 2006 11:36:54 PM

That is probably true, but this isn't too soon. It is a year later than it should of been! 8)

Intel will not be paper launching this product.

I've been thinking that too. but at the same time, considering how well the es chips floating around have been doing, I doubt there'll be any problems.

tarnslation with some grammar mistakes:

I posted this becouse I know nothing to say, but I want to say something. I have no ideas what to talk about, but I must make image that I am so smart, educated and intelegent. I am so sure I am exactly. This coded message will appear much more complex than the one I copied the idea from. So I will make illusion (fake image to my slef and to some of you) that I am an usefull and intelgent person. Actually I am cheating my slef, but I am too stupid to conclude that.

This is a good thing for Intel but the Opteron has too much of a lead. It was said that Woodcrestr has a few wins out there but just like it took AMD a few years to get SuperMicro it will take Intel a few years to get them back.

The first one should kill himself for speaking like that, the other should kill himself for knowing what it means.

I thought I would just post an update.

For those who are concerned that Woodcrest and the rest of the Core architecture is coming to market too soon and will have teething problems, they can be rest assured that that is not the case.

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=31789

Quote:
What I mean by better is almost bug free, runs faster than expected, and takes less power. The bug-free bit enabled a pull-in of the launch dates, if you don't need another stepping, you don't need another stepping.

Seems like Woodcrest runs so well, that they don't even need to due another stepping which is why the launch date was pulled forward to June 19th.

What is even more significant is that the TDP rating has reportedly dropped from 80W to the 65W of Conroe.

Quote:
The last part, less power, is the big one. I am told Woodcrest will be coming in with a 65W TDP. This is big news, and by no means a minor drop, it is on the order of 20%, and will most likely send AMD scrambling. Whatever magic Intel pulled off, well done.

This of course means that Intel was able to squeeze a 3GHz, 1333MHz FSB Woodcrest into the TDP rating of a 2.67GHz 1066Mhz FSB Conroe. Hopefully, the Conroe Extreme Edition sees a similar drop in TDP. This is quite an unexpected, but pleasant response to AMD's Socket F July launch announcement.
May 18, 2006 12:00:17 AM

Holy crap! Impressive stuff! Damn I wonder what sort of clocks they'll be able to hit with a TDP of 80w.
May 18, 2006 12:04:13 AM

OMG! WOW every day i look the CORE 2 DUO i always get better and better news about this CORE> Hope it does'nt dissapoint. Because i heard the saying that "The bigger they are, the harder they fall". and
"Don't get your hopes up too high. because it might just come out and Dissapoint you."

Plz chip gods let this rip the netburst celeron from this earth. It has been too slow for too long.
May 18, 2006 1:17:19 AM

Hmm, I wonder if the LV woodcrests are still at 40w.
May 18, 2006 1:36:36 AM

Hopefully, they'll drop the LV Woodcrest's TDP down to Merom's 35W and Merom's down to Yonah's 31W. It's probably better for them to keep it at 40W though since a 5W difference isn't that significant and it'll allow them to release a 2.67GHz Woodcrest LV that much sooner. In regards to Woodcrest's original 80W TDP, I always thought Intel left themselves a lot of breathing room. The thing with a 65W TDP for Woodcrest, even if their stepping is very good I don't think they've left themselves much clocking room. I guess it really doesn't matter though since they'll probably only release 1 more 65nm Woodcrest at 3.33GHz before transitioning to Cloverton which will probably have it's own TDP. After Cloverton, 45nm will be here to let them clock higher at the same TDP again.
May 18, 2006 2:20:45 AM

When do you think the Conroe chips will make it into retail computers? I'm going to college in late August, and I sure would like to get a conroe in my laptop.
May 18, 2006 2:25:06 AM

Merom is the notebook version and its due in August.
May 18, 2006 2:56:19 AM

As Action_Man said, Conroe is for desktop and will be available in July and Merom is for notebooks and will be available in August. I'm planning on getting a labtop in that time frame as well so I'm hoping Merom comes out on schedule. Theoretically adoption should be pretty quick since Merom is a drop in replacement for the current Yonah based Core Duo chips soo notebook makers don't even need to redesign anything. Still, old stock needs to be cleared (which may be a good deal depending on your needs) so I wouldn't expect a decent selection of Merom labtops until September.
