will a motherboard that is set up to accept ddr also support my old ram chips?

depends on what type of ram those chips are.... if by old ram chips, you mean older DDR ram.... provided it has the same number of pins as the slots do, then yes..... otherwise forget about it.

There are a couple exceptions to this... there are a few motherboards out there which support both ddr and sdr ram... however you will most often need to move some jumpers around on the board in order for it to accept one type or the other. You cannot in these cases however, install both types and expect the system to work.
