I'm looking for the best PCIE card that is within my budget ($100-$225CDN Incl. Tax) to replace my anemic x300se. I've been trying to decide which card would be best for the type of games I play (NFSMW, F.E.A.R., GRAW, TRL). I have been looking at the 7600GT from eVGA and XFX; However, I have recently done some research on ATI's X1xxx series and I like that fact that these cards are better at the shader intensive games I play. As well with ATI's AVIVO feature the games look better than with their nVidia counter-parts. I would like to be able to play these games with the following settings:

(1024x768, med quality, approx 30~40fps)

Based on the games and settings I mentioned here are my questions:

1. What is the ATI equivilent to the 7600gt, performance wise?
2. Will it still be within my budget?
3. Will any of these cards be able to play at, or around, the setting I want?

Thanks. :)

The X1800 GTO is the Ati equivalent to the 7600 GT. Unfortunately, it is probably not in your budget, I believe the X1800 GTOs are expensive on this side of the border.

If you're stuck on Ati an X1600 XT will handle 1024x768 at medium settings, but the 7600 GT is a much better and faster card in pretty much every game out there, shader intensive or not. You'd be doing yourself a huge disservice by not going with a 7600 GT over an X1600 XT.

should be able to get that gto for just over $300 and that is a superior card to the 7600 an actual equivitent is probably the x850 with is better than the x1600. Really you should save up and buy a little more card if you do game much cause 225 to 300 not a big streach for a far better card.

The weaker x1800 cards (gto/XL) are the equivalent to the 7600gt in terms of features and performance, but don't deny the 7600gt, it is a good card and is often $20-30 (U.S.) than the gto's and xl's. I don't know the prices in Canada, but maybe a x1800XL would be your best bet(x1800 core with 16 pipes, instead of the gto's 12).

An x1800 XL will put the hurt on a 7600 GT at higher settings, I'd put it a solid class above the 7600 GT, but it's much more expensive in Canada... unfortunately, the X1800 GTO is over $300 here, too.

But I've seen 7600 GTs around the $200 mark here. It's the clear choice, it'll get up to twice the framerates of the X1600 XT... I've used both of them in a review and I can tell you, there's no contest.

I have a XFX 7600 GT and I can play battlefield 2 on high settings with 4x AA and there is not problem, game runs very smoothly. The stock XFX 7600GT i receieved was clock at 570mhz core and 700mhz memory, but i overclocked it to 595mhz core and 755mhz memory and it runs very very nicely. I love this card and its well worth the money but if you can afford to spend about 300$ get a 7900GT with 24 pipelines and its far superior to the x1800 GTO/XL in performance, but dont get me wrong the x1xxx series is great card series. I would reccomend this card if you dont game above 1024x768 resolution because it runs awesome.

Ya but you went from Shader 3.0 to Shader 2.0b. I know it's a matter of preference but I wouldn't go to a X8xx series at this point, expecially if you are going to be playing games like Oblivion.

I don't know about that, I have an X800Pro and I can play Oblivion just fine. If you don't mind not having HDR the X8** series is just fine for Oblivion. On the other hand while I do have a previous generation video card, I have heard some good things about the Nvidia 7600 cards and am considering trying one out myself, and would like to see what HDR looks like. But the X1800 is not that much more so I may go that direction too as I like ATI cards (Been a fan since the 9500pro).

Hmm, well here's an X850XT for 225 CAD Looks strange because that's awfully inexpensive price for it compared to other X850XTs on that site.

But, then again, here's another X850XT from a French/Canadian site as well.

Granted it doesn't give you the SM 3.0, but the X850XT is still a solid contender when it comes to the 7600GT and will outclass the X1600XT.

So....again....it boils down to the X850XT or the 7600GT. Both are excellent performers. Here we go again.

I love how people can't decide between these two cards, neither is better nor worse and at around the same price too.
