What a great video. I remember having a sideslip landing demonstrated to me
in a glider. Quite a sickening feeling. In a glider sideslip landings are
used not for crosswind component but to increase the drag, i.e. lose speed
and height.

Those crosswind landings just brought them all back.

im sure they would have to do a check on the gear/tires after that!! but
then those are xtreme landings at the end, im sure in real life they wouldnt
risk that with passengers onboard, it would throw everyone out the seats!!!
surely?

Found the link elsewhere this morning (it seems to be doing the
rounds). What's so impressive ? I do landings like that all the time,
even with no crosswind ! :-)))

Can some kind soul that has the clip translate the text ? I ran it
through googles translator but it barfed :-( Dumb question: they are
in Spanish, aren't they ?

And all the kind souls that don't have the clip, get it ! File size
is about 3 megs.

Cheers

I cannot translate I'm afraid, but I would guess it is Portuguese, not
Spanish.
The website has a .br domain, which is probably Brazil.

I wouldn't give you a nickel for the landing gear after those events. I
have to admire the test pilots...they must be awesome in their profession.

First thing: No, it's portuguese... ;-) Then the second thing: even when it
looks quite rough it's not so uncommon. I remember to have seen this footage
before during my active career. It's derived from Boeing's certification
program to demonstrate crosswind capabilites. Remember: the manufacturer
does usually not issue crosswind limits. They are just "demostrated"
crosswind components. The limirts are usually set by the companies.
It is obvious that these shots were taken with a impressive tele-lens. So
the crab looks much more impressive than it actually is. I would guess it to
be around 15°. And before we start a long thread again ;-) (I remember that
subject being covered last year) I can tell you that heavies are landed with
no or only minor decrabbing to avoid banking on touchdowm. There's not much
clearance left under the engines..... No checking on the tyres required.
It's a common practise ;-))))

It's a no-brainer on a 747 since they have swiveling main gears.
But I don't know about the tripple 7's.
Impressive video - even the music is haunting ;-))

The pilots better be quick on their feet - did you guys notice the
extreme rudder deflections right around touchdown?

Uh.. that's a new one on me, are you sure? The B-52 gear can be turned into
the runway heading, but I thought that was the only one.

Well, it's only the two inner main gear which are swiveling (the ones that
touch down first). So they're not adjusted to the crab but just swiveling
in, hydraulically dampened of course.

I read that in postings and articles about 747's landing at the old
Kai-Tak airport in Hong Kong. And have come across that info at
various other sites. If I find some, I'll post them.

The C-5A main gear actually turns 90° before retraction. Whether it
can swivel to align with the runway heading is another story.

The A380 will have some swiveling main gears.

AWST, in a recent issue, showed pics of ground testing the A380 in
very tight turns. Turns that exceeded the capability of the outboard
gears to follow which then actually dug grooves into the tarmac. The
caption said something about some bogies canl swivel, but not all.
As I recall there were 5 or 6 bogies under the behemoths belly.

This distressed some airport operators (I wonder why? ;-( )

(I really should start saving my AWST issues ;-) After all it's a hell
of an expensive subscription. I had decided against saving them
because the local library also has them. And they do save 'em.)

The Boeing 777's bogies are designed to turn to they can go around tight
corners while taxiing, much like some military and contruction trucks.
Perhaps they can also be turned to accomodate those crabs we witnessed in
the clips.

WOW that is something to watch. Do those aircraft have landing gears that
have the ability to caster (rotate laterally). I know the B52's did.

After flying the simulators on the larger planes it become very evident that
banking the big guys during flare out creates issues :)

When I have trouble downloading a video I right click and choose "OPEN

click and SAVE AS.

Here you go:

It is not everyday...
we encounter calm winds.
What to do in these situations?
FLY
Return to the era of aeroclub
Remember your instructors
and make a safe landing
These pilots have certainly flown conventional aeroplanes
LEARN WITH THE BEST

eh eh

I guess it is kind of an advert to a flight school.
