I have the opportunity to buy an AMD 64 mobile 3400+ quite cheaply. Apparently they will overclock quite well, but the only downside is that it needs a skt 754 motherboard. Having looked around a bit, most of the motherboards seem to only have 2 or 3 slots for ram. I would rather have 4 slots for 4 x 512mb in dual channel. Anyone know of any good motherboards, or whether it is a good idea to put AMD mobile's into desktop PCs at all? It will be used solely for gaming.

Socket 754 CPU's do not support dual channel memory, this is not a very big deal, there is not much performance gained by having dual channel.

Concentrate on the amount and the timings.

What could I realistically overclock it to (so it's still perfectly stable, and how would it compare to normal desktop CPUs?

Overclocking would depend a lot on the motherboard you get, but I would say you could easilty get an extra 200MHz and keep it stable (more if on good mobo).

All 754 cpu's are only single channel, thus the motherboards for them only have 2 slots. Cool & quiet works fine on most of the newer boards. For overclocking, the best board is the 754 DFI nforce3 board, however, there are many nforce4 boards that are ALMOST as good. Keep in mind, though, that a 90nm cpu will overclock MUCH better than a 130nm one. Do you know which this is (I don't remember seeing a 90nm 3400 mobile).

Read this article that reviews 3 motherboards for Turion 64 compatiblity.

Of the 3 mobos reviewed, the MSI RS482M-IL is the only that supports Cool 'n Quiet; an important feature for reducing power consumption under light loads.

This is an unofficial list of motherboards tested for Turion compatibility. It is from a Japanese website, and not really contain indepth information.

Sorry, wrong post. I was in another forum that was discussing the S754 Turion 64s. I saw "AMD 64 Mobile" in the title and I assumed you were referring to the Turion.

Now i'm confused.

Ok, well dollar for dollar you only real 754 options are all 90nm.

athlon 3000 - $129 2.0ghz 512mb L2 (OC to 2500mhz or higher)
athlon 3200 - $149 2.2ghz 512mb L2 (OC to 2750mhz or higher)
athlon 4000 - $297 2.6ghz 1024mb L2 (OC between 3000 & 3250 common, higher if you're good)

Before the Turion 64 there was the mobile Athlon 64. The mobile Athlon 64 was basically a desktop 130nm Athlon 64 that was tested to determine if it was able to run at lower voltages than the typical CPU. If it was, then it was binned as a mobile CPU.

The Turion is the 90nm version of the Socket 754 Athlon 64. But because of they have different CPU identifiers some motherboards may recognize the Turion incorrectly, or not at all. But get a DFI or MSI mobo just to be sure.

Since you indicated that the CPU is 130nm, then that means it is a mobile Athlon 64. You should be able to drop it into any S754 motherboard and it will be recognized.
