I don't have an unlimited budget but a reasonable one. I am building 2 of these systems so I cannot get too crazy. Please let me know if you think anything on this list will be overkill or inadequate. Also if any substitutions should be made or there is anything I have overlooked.

I am just building the barebones and will be using my original memory, and hard drives.

Processor - Amd Athlon 64 3700+ 64 bit Socket 939 1024k cache

Motherboard - Asus A8n-E nForce 4 Ultra, PCI-Ex DDR 400, Sata Lan

Graphics card - I was originally planning on the x850xt 256 but I am now considering the x1800xt 256

Thanks

You can easily scale that back to a 3200+, won't really be able to tell a huge difference and will save money.

Good deal so far, since you are thinking of an x1800xt hopefully you have a decent case / PSU in your current rig.

Another card you may want to look at is the HIS Radeon X1800 GTO IceQ3 Turbo 256MB for $237 it does overclock nicely with that cooler check out this review over at vrzone they have an impressive 37% OC.

the x1800xt is a far more superior card. If you would want to OC you could save some money. You could get a DFI lanparty and a opty 144 and get it to 3700 or even 4000 speeds.

I mostly play Guild Wars (both campaigns). If you see Onus Bones or Soon Dai Yu, that's me. Anyway, I just built a new gaming machine that handles GW very nicely on max settings, for about $1K.
I used an Abit KN8 Ultra NF4 mobo, X2 3800+ CPU, eVGA 7600GT, Aspire 500W PSU in a cheap PowMax case to which I added 2 120MM fans.
My backup PC runs at the same settings very well too; it uses the same mobo and PSU, but only a 6600 GPU and XP 3200+ CPU; it cost about $650.

Edit: Sorry, the point being that you have selected a similar range of components, so you will likely be satisfied with your results for the intended purpose. I think yours were the two ATI cards I was considering; I just happened to select nVidia for these machines. You may want to choose a dual-core CPU; definitely for future-proofing, but now to stop your game from jerking when some background process wants to run in the middle of a mission.

Well i was planning on upgrading the case and power supply also.

Case - Niako Black neon ATX case with temp control front USB & iEEE
http://froogle.9micro1.com/pmoreinfo.asp?iid=892

I will be getting a Spire kestrel-King III Amd 64 approved Extra Quiet fan for the processor

and a case fan. Will I need any more fans?

I was planing on a 600w ATX Power supply.

That is cool w/ the temp sensor & front panel display. I usually go w/ at least 2 fans, one front intake (helps cool hdds) and one exhaust. The side panel fan will help out a lot if you are really stressing your cpu and / or gpu with OC.

All those fans add up to a good amount of noise so if they are not temp controlled fans maybe a fan controller like one of these vantec drive-bay controllers can help reduce the noise, the temp sensors can assist you to get the best cooling with the least amount of noise.
