Lexmark Optra R Paper Sensor

I'm having a problem with a Lexmark Optra R laser printer. The printer is
reporting "out of paper" when I try to feed from the bottom tray. The sheet
feeder still works, however. I suspect it is a problem with the paper
sensor. It does appear as if someone has dumped a good deal of toner in the
unit, and there is a black streek right underneath the foot of the paper
sensor. Is there any easy solution to this?
