Hey guys. I just built a desktop about 1-2 months ago because I was ready for some real PC gaming. Now that im going to college, my Parents bought me a nice laptop:

-Inspiron E1705, Intel Core DuoProcessor T2400 (1.83GHz/667MHz FSB)
-17 inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WUXGA, for Inspiron 9400/E1705
-512MB, DDR2, 533MHz 2 Dimm for Inspiron 9400/E1705 (i plan on getting 2 GB soon)
-256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 for Inspiron 9400/E1705
-100GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive for Inspiron 9400/E1705
-Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, English without Media, for Inspiron
-Integrated 10/100 Network Cardand Modem, for Inspiron
-8X DVD+/-RW Drive, for Inspiron 9400/E1705
-SoundBlaster Advanced Audio for XPS M1710
-Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps) for Inspiron 9400/E1705
-Primary Battery (6 cell), for Inspiron 9400/E1705
-Extra-Large Nylon Deluxe Carrying Case, for Inspiron 9200/9300
-80 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Additional Battery, for Inspiron 9400/E1705

for only about $1400.

The system I built was:

-XION XION II XON-101 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450W Power Supply
-ASPIRE Chameleon 550W Power Supply
-ASUS A8N-E Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard (up to 325 HTT)
-Opty 165 CCBBE 0610DPMW stepping
-Scythe Ninja Plus
-OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Platinum System Memory
-Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
-NEC 16x DVD Burner ND-3550A
-eVGA Geforce 6800GS 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card

I also have a AMD Athlon 64 3500+ and ECS KN1 SLI Lite (1.0A) Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard i am not using.

I am a big gamer, favorite BF2, and will continue to game in College. Is the laptop i got capable of the same gaming level i have right now (pluged in AC of course)

What do you think I should do, I dont want to keep this desktop if i can game with my laptop, because im not really that rich... Should i sell the parts individually, bundled, ar as a complete system. How much could I get for all that...and then the ECS/ 3500. My current rig is pretty much a beast, it is faster than everything in the consumer market (not gaming of course) except the RAIDed Raptors.

Whats the best option?

You'll deff need to go to atleast a gig on the ram. However it will not be ca2 like in your current system beucase sodimms have a much higher cas than sdram.

Also you may want to get some external storage, youll see the diffrence in teh 5400 drive, you could get one of those new 160 hitachi drives that just came out( they claim its the fastest yet). Im not sure what your rig was working off of as far as display goes, but I find that my Alienware screen is till nothing compaired to my crt.

For a ked that just graduated college, keep the laptop. Its not the ultimate gamming machine, but laptops are not designed to be that. In your four years of college, you'll probably own two or more laptops, plus a rig or two.

Yeah i am definately getting 2GB RAM...For gaming im not so distressed about my load times being a little longer because of the higher CAS and slower HDD. As long as the 7800 GO is about the same as 6800 GS (the specs are pretty identical)

ANy ideas on what to do with the desktop? I definately dont want to keep it and let it depreciate even more now...especially since no one at home would use it.

I like your system. You parents should have bought you 2 x1900xt's. I dont know about you but I find it useful to have a desktop and a laptop. But those are two nice systems.

Thanks lol. I built the desktop and my parents got the laptop (with my choice of course)

I did pretty good with my desktop build...my only mistake i think was not getting a DFI board and getting that 3500 (not so bad...just didnt know i was gonna get that opty) If i had a top of the line vid card in my PC iwouldnt sell it prolly... but i dont want to spend the money right now to get another vid card...especially if i build another system in a few years i will prolly want a conroe. I dont think I will need a dektop and laptop in college, especially if this laptop performs as well as it should with 2GB.

I will also get a large external HDD when the time comes.

Any idea on how much i could get for that desktop and mobo and cpu?

I'd keep both as well. Take both with you and leave the desktop in your dormroom, take the laptop to class or other. That way you still have your gaming machine and something portable at the same time.

If you don't like that then sell the desktop, probably get more if you break it down into it's components. Save that for when you want a desktop again, I'm going to guess this won't happen and you'll have $600 worth of beer in your first week at college....

The desktop is a great piece of hardware except for the video card so you could get a good bit prolly. I would buy it but you know how that goes. Stupid car insurance.
