Hi, although my homebuilt gaming PC is only just recent i made a foolish mistake on my choice of CPU. I opted for the Athlon 3700+ to trim the price a bit, only realising my mistake after ordering... What i mean is the rest of my system is way above my CPU in terms of performance and power and so i think i may not be getting the performance that i could have been getting with a little more high range proccessor. Every time i look at my system typed out the 3700+ just makes it look so low range and crappy and so i am now reluctantly considering buying a better gaming CPU. First of all do you guys think my CPU is much too weak compared to the rest of my rig? If so what CPU do you suggest i get thats not too much of an increase in price and that suits my gaming needs?? I was thinking of maybe the Athlon x2 4200 :?: thanks for any advice.
If anything it is your Graphics card that is slowing you down. You may think that the 7800gtx you have is great but for the same price or less some 7900gt's are putting out better #'s and with Rivatuner its gets even better. Plus check out any overclocking forum. I would say ~50% of the systems use the 3700+. Look there and find some info about your MB and what things can be done.
If you are going dual core later, I would go for a 4400+. In multi-threaded apps you will see an improvement with the the 4200+, but in single threaded ones you will see a decrease. The X2 4400+ is two 3700+'s, and the 4200+ is two 3500+'s.
You're not losing alot of frames per sec. You could be better but we all could do better somewhere. The truth is as long as the games play great it doesnt matter. You have a top notch system with only a blemish. Big deal, dont worry about it. Besides enjoy the extra money right now. And a year from now go get a decent priced CPU. the 4000+ is currently the top price performance leader anyway. You aint far off.
