I recall a post about a year ago expressing distain for people who spend
countless hours making freeware, then making completely unintelligible
install instructions. Tonight I understand. After undoing "nested" zip
files inside zip files and tracking down texture files for NOVA Gold,
Airport 2.10 and VOD Textures I ran across these install instructions:
This is Scenery to suit the 200MEG file which is highly recommended. If U
can't D/load - want it - email a team person at address below,hear they
post, for price off CD and return mail envolpe . For low end users or default
install this scenery file, texture package will work with this and install
extra to enchance as long as u use XDEFAULT scenery file .It will be easy if
u have a mucked up ,just swap the the scenery folders over .

Just one of the reasons I'm reluctant to download freeware. I know a lot of
people do it, but it really makes me nervous. I've tried a few times and
was successful only twice.
I like payware, not because I have money to throw around, but I know the
product will usually be easy to install with plenty of support. I have
enough trouble controlling my blood pressure without wrestling with some
freeware, although I accepted the challenge of assembling a new, large
barbeque over the weekend.
I'll be going for therapy this afternoon.

Part of the FlightSim challenge is configuration and editing. You have
WinZip yes? nested zips are no problem really. simply keep unpacking,
copying and moving around the files.. and assign the correct paths.
Like getting all the components together and making it work. OTOH
paywares have nifty install exe's that take care of everything.
Now best to go and re-organize your scenery folders.. Dallas!! ;]
and of course back up your work!

p.s. how about (as above) make TWO large scenery folders for swap

Hi,

It sounds like you ran into quite a mess, but I feel I do need to say
something in defense of "nesting".
I've been building Michigan airports since it was first possible to do
that and I have found through experience that "nesting" generally
results in less problems for those trying to install scenery. By
putting the sceney (bgl) files in one folder, the texture files (bmp)
into another folder, etc., the chances of someone putting the wrong
files in the wrong place are greatly reduced. This also adds
flexibility for those who prefer to put their scenery on a different
drive or in a different folder. I've also put a lot of effort into
writing directions that are foolproof - or so I hope. You may have no
interest in Michigan scenery, but you are welcome to check out any of
the airport packages at this address:
If nothing else, I'd be interested in knowing if my installation
directions are better then what you ran into. I'm not promising that
I'd change them to suit you but I'm always willing to listen.

Ha! If you wrote your instructions in Portuguese they would be easier to
understand than that guy. :-)
Seriously, I can tell from your awesome website that you are the kind of guy
that can handle writing instructions. Man, you are prolific!
Nesting zips: I don't get what's wrong with unzipping into a folder like
Keweenaw, with the scenery and texture folders inside. Then just simply say
"Move Keweenaw to Addon Scenery" etc.
I was a bit ragged last night after installing about 7 of these airports,
I'd say 50% of them could not be understood or installed by a newbie. I'd
swear 25% of the authors did not have any communication skills at all. I'm
not so much complaining, as I was just shocked and amazed. :-)

Thank you. I think. ;-)

We try. What you see there is just the tip of the iceburg - at one
time I had all 270+ Michigan airports done and I'm just now starting
back through the list again. Now that I have a helper and access to
better source material (like satellite photos) - the end result is a
big step up from what I've done in the past.

I'm afaid I'm not sure exactly what you are saying here, but I'll take
a shot at it. Many people put their scenery in other places besides
the "Addon Scenery" folder (I always did till recently). If we
crammed all of the scenery files (including texture files, landclass
files, effect files, etc.) into a single "Keweenaw" folder (for
instance), then anyone who wanted to put their scenery files someplace
would have to dig through the whole mess to find them. By keeping
each type of file in it's own folder, you avoid that confusion and the
problems that come with that confusion - and since I'm the one who
usually has to field the questions that come from that confusion, I
try to nip it in the bud. ;-)

Sometimes it's a language barrier, and you can't blame anyone for
that. But I have also ran into some of the situations you speak of.
The nice thing about freeware is that if you don't like it, you just
junk it - and you haven't lost a cent.

The first time this came up here it sparked a feisty debate between the
"Hey, what do you want... it's free" people and the "Why are they wasting my
time" people. I don't either side won.
I was not trying to restart that debate, I was posting what I thought was
one of the funniest things I'd seen all day.
I fall on the "What do you want... it's free" side of the argument. I
figure you freeware guys have earned a great place in simulator heaven.
