My son recently purchased a used copy of MS Flight Simulator '98 at a
yard sale. When we tried to install it, it asked for an activation key
which we don't have (it wasn't in the original case). How can I get the
activation key for this game? I think it's an OEM version but we don't
know what PC manufacturer originally sold it. If someone could point me
to where I can get a key, or if someone could email one to me I would
greatly appreciate it. It's such an old version I don't think anyone
would care about giving away the key.

I vaguely remember one of the old versions asked for a key, but none was
really necessary, just leave it blank, hit enter and keep going.
FS-98??? Hmmm - can't remember for sure... Also my memory isn't what it
used to be... Took a memory correspondense course once, but forgot where to
send the lessons...

Still have FS98 lying around here. Couldn't remeber i needed an activation
key upon install. Therefore, i checked CD + box again, no activation key
found...

I don't know about FS98 specifically, but most games with activation keys
use different keys for specific CD's, this is to prevent illegal copies. So
even if someone sent you one it probably wouldn't work. My suggestion if
you really want FS98 is to look in the bargain bins at a computer store and
you'll probably find a brand new CD, with its key, for about $8. Or even
better FS02 probably sells for about $12 now, and FS04 is selling for $25.
(You'll want to skip FS2000, though.) Remember, originally these games went
for $50 so it's still quite a bargain.

FS2004 for $25???
Is that US$
I paid $99 Australian about 5 months ago! (not that I mind, 'cos it's an
awesome game and worth every penny!)

Yes, US$25.99 at Amazon.com right now. Older versions are also available
through Amazon for even lower.

Hee hee! True enough as far as the basic program cost is concerned,
but then there are all the lovely payware add-ons, computer hardware
upgrades, yokes, pedals, throttle quadrants, and joysticks! It's
embarrassing to note just how much I've spent since becoming addicted
to this once seemingly harmless "$50 program"! :-)

You can find working activation keys for just about any software if
you search on the web hard enough. Even the product key code for one
copy of XP works on another copy of XP.

Dug out my copy and installed it on an Athlon xp 2000 Geforce3 ti200 rig
running Windows Xp.No code was asked for and the game installed fine.Worked
in software mode but hardware d3d had so much graphics smearing as to make
it unplayable. There is a sticker on the cd case as follows CD SET
X03-55111.Hope this helps.

The problem with activation keys for FS98 was that they were only
required for OEM versions shipped with a computer, and only ran for
that machine if I remember well...

Add to that the extra I paid to the computer to bring it up to spec to use
FS. In reality I could have got away with a bargain basement PC as Ionly
really use it for WP and web browsing.
Had to claim to she who must be obeyed that I was going to edit all our home
videos.
Ratio of time spent on FS to video editing? 95:1 I would guess.

LOL, yeah I know what you mean, I'm in the same boat, full compliment of CH
Products. But I think I'm happy now, unless a plane I really love becomes
available in payware. I think I have more money invested on the computer
than anything else, except maybe my truck

And my son is willing to use the arrow keys. I guess I at least ought to
spring for a new usb joystick. (The old one had a game port style
connector. New computer has no game port).

Tried that. Every site that claimed to have them was just a front for
porno. Do you know how emarassing it is to have your wife and 12yo child
sitting next to the computer when you click on that link that google
thinks has activation keys, only to have it take you to a porno site?

I found one easy enough. Is your's an OEM copy? If so here's the
activation key I found.

If it was/is a high-enough-quality joystick to be worth preserving, and
you've a spare PCI slot, most 'cheap'n cheerful' soundcards will provide
a gameport: you can ignore/disable the sound-capability.
A dialog box will appear to install ActiveX control - just click it off and
cut/paste serial nr. into a text editor.

Not really that great. It's about a 10 year old Gravis Flight Stick. I'm
just gonna look for a new USB stick. Is there a cheap game port to usb
adapter? We've got a "V3" something or other with steering wheel and
pedals that someone gave us too, but it's got the old game port
connector as well.

I use my momo racing pedals as aircraft rudder pedals and it works fine.
There are no brakes but I get by without them. However mine are USB.
Someone here with more knowledge might tell you if they will work with a
game port to usb converter. It seems that it should since rudder pedals
for aircraft are a simple 2 axis control. I have to have my steering
wheel attached also but I just shove it under the desk and forget about it.
If it would work you will like having rudder pedals especially when
flying helicopters.
