Currently I have a 7800GT x2 SLI setup in my PC; eBayer is having a great offer on, for a 7900GTX 512MB costing just £300. Should I kick the two 7800GTs out to get the 7900GTX?

My specs:
A64 3500+, A8N-SLI SE, 2GB RAM, 2x 7800GT

My problem has always been getting good enough frame rates on my 24" widescreen (running stuff at 1920x1200), and the 2 7800GT can't quite cut it.

I'd say get a good processor instead like the X2 4800+.

Ahhh you see, that's not really an option, as I could sell both 7800GTs and buy a 7900GTX for the money, without having to spend any additional....

actually i have been thinking and my advice is wrong. you sholuld not get another gfx card at all. your SLI config is equal to my 1900 and since a 7900 is roughly equal to my 1900 you will see little if any real world difference.

i thought your last thread showed that. oh and if you play oblvion which i think you said you did you would want the 1900.

There is another practical consideration though:
Now I can get one 7900GTX (or 1900XT) by selling my two 7800GT. That means not only will i have less noise and heat in my PC but I will also be able to buy another 7900GTX/1900XT in a few months time, if need be. If I wait several months to sell my 7800GT I wouldn't get much money for them anymore.

Reply to naujoks

if that is your choice then go for it. since you already have an sli board it is probably better to get the 7900 if you plan on getting another.

Well, here we are, just ordered a 7900GTX for £300 from eBuyer. Should get it all back for the sale of my two 7800GTs on eBay. Now I just hope that at least I get the same frame rates as before. The only advantage then being that in 6 months time I will be able to stick another one of those babies in, in order to be able to play the latest games. Or maybe rip this one out and get a next gen card.

good good, least in six months time the same card will cost peanuts to buy. lets also hope you don'ty play any games which uses openexr HDR :)

Reply to strangestranger

Openexr HDR?? 8O

Reply to naujoks

its a method of doing HDR lighting in games. nvidia cards can't do AA and HDR at the same time. one game that uses it is oblivion but you need a certain patch to make it work as they disabled it to keep nvidia users happy or so i believe.

i believe most games apart from source based ones like HL2 all use it. hope you either like jaggies or don't like HDR lighting

Bah! Humbug! AA? SchmAHA! I've never been a big fan of AA anyway.

I know the single 7900GTX won't help me, but my hope is that at least it will perform just as well as the two 7800GTs. The advantage would be that I have less noise, probably less power consumption and, most importantly I have a free slot for another 7900GTX. Maybe I won't need to fill it at all but get one DX10 card when it comes out.

So at present my only worry is: WILL the one 7900GTX perform at the same level as both 7800GTs. I'm hoping, but tomorrow we will know more.

Keep the dual 7800GTs. Getting a single 7900GTX won't help you. And the 7800GTs will surely last until you need DX10 cards.

Right, if anyone's interested:
the two 7800GTs are gone, the one 7900GTX is in. Ran 3DMark2005, and ended up with about 500 points less than before (9300), but with the Coolbits arranged overclocking, I almost ended up with the same score as before again. More importantly: Hitman Blood Money minimum frame rates are up by 5, which makes me happy. I reckon the 512MB compared to the 256MB of old make a bit of a difference.

2005, run 06 to really test it out. SLi usually always runs better in synthetic benchmarks. real life games are sometimes different.

One reason my system probably destroys yours in 3DMark06; regular gaming would be very similar however.

Reply to Heyyou27

an overclocked 4800 probably helps too :)

Reply to strangestranger

The small overclock doesn't help much; my reason for overclocking this CPU out of the box has to do with my friend owning an FX55. This way I can brag saying "Hey my CPU is like two of yours!"

Also, when I got my 7800GTs, the X1900 and 7900s were not out. It was between a 7800GTX 512MB ($750) and two 7800GTs ($640)

3DMark2006:
4979 with one 7900GTX (and slight overclock, following Coolbits(TM) recommendations)
5090 with two 78000SLI (stock speed). Not a big difference, but I've just tried out CONDEMNED. And lo and behold! Framerates CONSTANTLY over 30 (when previously at around 20), and now I am even able to max out all the details! Frankly, that's all I wanted. I'm happy now!

My 3DMark06 score is 7,305.

Reply to Heyyou27

Mainly down to your CPU, no doubt. I'm just on a modest A64 3500+ of course.

My 7800GTs are also probably clocked higher than the ones you had.

Reply to Heyyou27

Did you OC them?

They came at 470MHz core 1.1GHz memory.

Mmmmmh just seen an offer for the new Athlon X2 5000+ for just £400. That would send that 7900GTX flying, no doubt!

Reply to naujoks

Just ran the Half Life Lost Coast stress test.
On my two 7800GT I had 55fps average, and now with the 7900GTX it's 80! Now, that's what I call a result!

So, the answer to Go and get one 7900GTX, from 2x 7800GT SLI? Is a resounding YES (just like IcBlUsCrn said initially)!

Reply to naujoks

very impressive. thats 25fps more than me. considering both our cards are usually equally matched.

Reply to strangestranger

Frustratingly, Tomb Raider Legends still largely unplayable with Next Gen Content switched on :(
