ok...i'm building a backup setup for myself from a couple of spare parts...I had a N2U400-A board and just bought a xp 2600+ processor from ebay. My system POSTs but my processor comes up "unknown processor type". Windows XP logo pops up and then my system crashes. I went to start it up in save mode.... I select save mode ...it starts to load a couple of files and crash again. I tried it with all the "F8" options and the same thing happens. So i try to reintall WinXp. It started to load all the drivers and stuff but when it got to "loading windows setup" crash once again. OK so i think maybe because the processor isn't showing up correctly. I don't have the choice of setting the muliplier but i do for the FSB. OK ... maybe i'm not reading into this right but i've got a Athlon XP 2600+ (2.13GHz, 266MHz) and looking to the motherboard specs..it should support it. I managed to get 2134MHz when i set the FSB to 195 so i guess the mutipler is at like 11ish. But still "unknown processor type" and same things while trying to install windows. I tried another HD and Memory...same thing. Makes no sence to me .... please help.

I have an XP2600+ chip and a K7VTA3 M/B and it acts up. I think it is the chip, but I am not sure. I switched the XP2600 with a XP2000+ lowered the FSB to 266 and it works. I also put a Duron 1200 chip with an FSB of 200 and it works. When I put the XP2600+ in at the lower FSB (the XP2600+ FSB is 333), it also worked once but then wouldn't work. So, here is what I suggest.
1. See if you can find someone that can test the chip. Since you bought it on ebay, I may have doubts.
2. Reduce the FSB speed on the MB and see if it works.
3. Switch to another chip to check out the MB.

I will admit that I wasn't sure if it was the chip or the 333 FSB on the MB. I have used the chip with two K7VTA3 MBs and it worked initially but then wouldn't. When I changed chips and reduced the FSB, the MBs worked. So right now, I have an XP2000+ that works fine.
