How do I smooth out my Zalman. 820D@59C?!

Help. I have mounted and remounted my heatsink/fan twice before and the lowest i got was around 44 C at idle.

I am going to clean out my Zalman, but while I'm at it, I think the connection to the chip isn't good enough or something because my mobo is hot, but the fan is cool.

I have a 945PSN mobo from intel.

I heard I can smooth out the bottom of the heatsink.

-What are the steps to lapping the heatsink?

You're using thermal paste, right?
yes. AS5. i did the rice dot first. then checked to see the spreading. it looks as thought the Artic Silver is gathering slightly toward each end, instead of in the middle. So then i tried the razor blade spread method.

That's where i'm at right now:
44 C with just firefox open
38 C zone 1
35 C Zone 2

I'm OC'd 4% which is the max this board allows. So instead of 2.8 I'm at2.93GHz

this is after pulling the Zalman off after the last connection

issue seems to be solved.

This is with my fans running at full blast, except the GPU one. I have a front and rear 120mm and a side 90mm.

i just wish these things ran even cooler. i thought the Zalman would have it idle at 36. But this Intel 945PSN isn't that great anyway.

with my computer on for 24 hours it idles higher. closer to 45 degrees or so. guess that' normal for this processor. i can't wait for the new retail edge promotion!

45c is a good idle temps for an 820 chip. If you can change your vcore to its minimum operating voltage of 1.25 and it should help lower temps especially at full load. I did that on my 840 which has a defualt of 1.38v, so I changed it to 1.25v and got 3c lower temps using Thermatake Big Typhoon HSF and without any difference in performance.

well i'm stuck as far as voltages because my intel 945PSN board doesn't allow any changes to voltage
