Well, right now, im on a budget, not like some pple... with their FX-60. My budget is around $200 - $300 (more or less)

right now, within that budget, i can either get one of these, but I am not sure which would be a better choice of cpu...

INTEL D 940 or AMDx2 3800

also, anyone have a clue weather i should get XEON or OPTY instead of the mainstream CPUS? its because I will also be doing some overclocking a bit later on.

and if possible, neone plz tell me the difference between using a server CPU and a mainstream CPU, because I have not seen any CPU charts comparing the 3800 x2 with an OPTY or Intel D 940 with an XEON

Save yourself some money if you decide to go the Intel route and get the 930.

Thanksk guys for posting info.

Yeah, right now, im just posting for my own knowledge for the CPUS on computer, no real rush to get a new compy yet. Mostly getting it during around summer to even early fall.

I guess its all about the "waiting game" the longer I wait, the better the prices would become.

I'm thinking, if I get conroe, getting a mobo for it would definitely increase the cost... and same with am2

Unless those prices are pretty stable when they come up, I am thinking of staying towards the 939 or 775 pins.

yeah, im problaby gonna wait

but neone know about opty and xeon so i can compare?

its cause even if conroe/am2 comes out, i might wanna stick to the old architechture

I'd like to see the two chips get a full round of real application benchmarks. The Core Duo does extremely well at SuperPi also BUT it does not really beat the X2 chips in most applications. You could even make a case for saying that the Core Duo is a terrible chip because you compared its MP3 encoding time to the Athlon X2s or Turion X2 and the Core Duo was a lot slower.

wow, just checked local store, they have am2 prices!!!

cant wait till benchmarks come out... then ill do a bit more thinking!

Current xeons dont make very good desktop chips. The A64s outdo them at every turn.
Opterons are higher binned A64s, with more cache. They OC better.
Compared to conroe, AMD chips may win some. They will loose some. How the mix goes, no-one really knows at this point.

oh, how bout comparing opty series with the amd x2 series?

like x2 3800 with an opty 165/150/144

which one should be better? I don't plan to overclock either one till warrenty expires (unless opty lets us oc without killing the warrenty)

that means about 3 years

Reply to TSIllusion

the opty oc's very well. a lot of the 165's oc beyond a stock fx-60

Xeons are Socket 604 and under perform very badly.

AMD64s and Opterons outperform all P4 based Intel CPUs especially in gaming and are 25-75% faster in 64bit mode.

In addition to this 2xx and 8xx Opterons your memory bandwidth increases linearly.

With 2 CPUs and 4 memory sticks you have 2x the memory bandwidth ( 2x6.4GB/sec )

With 4 CPUs and 8 memory sticks you have 4x the memory bandwidth ( 4x6.4GB/sec )

With 8 CPUs and 16 memory sticks you have 8x the memory bandwidth ( 8x6.4GB/sec )

In Xeon systems:
with 2 CPUs your memory bandwidth is 1/2
with 4 CPUs your memory bandwidth is 1/4
with 8 CPUs your memory bandwidth is 1/8 ( theoretical )

Also many opteron boards integrate multiple north bridges and PCI-X bridges for increased IO bandwidth as well.

The Tyan S2895A2NRF has 2 nVidia North Bridges + 2 full X16 PCI-E slots running at full X16 speed for a total of 32 PCI-E lanes ( which doubles your PCI-E bandwidth ) + 2 independent PCI-X bridges for greatly increased PCI-X bandwidth.

The IWill and Supermicro boards have a similar architecture.
