SLI or XFire on different models or brands possible?

Anyone tried this? Does it work.

What I mean. Two SLI/Xfire cards same GPU, from different maker, or
old and new card same GPU and same maker.

I ask because I am thinking of getting an SLI/XFire board but one good card first, then later buy the other card.

But I am not be able to get the exact same card (maker may have upgraded card etc).

Anyone any ideas?

As prozac stated, SLI supports configurations with the same model.
