Samsung ML-1470 Laser Printer, Great Printer, bad rebate.
4 or 5 stars
This is a great little printer. I already had an old HP deskjet
960c color printer, but the ink costs were too high. I had read
that HP was implementing microchip-based ink expiration dates in
the cartridges of their newer printers and I wanted to avoid that
so I decided that to extend the life of the 960c I could off-load
95% of my printing to a small B&W laser.
I did some research and read some good comments about the Samsung
ML-1740. This printer is better than the comments described. It
warms up from power-save mode in about 20 seconds. Once out of
power-save mode it will start printing in about two seconds from
the time you submit the print job. You can adjust the time-delay
before power-save from the computer from 5-minutes to 60-minutes.
You can also "wake" the printer when it's in power-save by
pressing the cancel button. That's a handy feature. If the
printer is in power-save mode and I don't want to wait the 20
seconds for the print job to wake the printer, I just touch the
button when I know I'm getting ready to print. Once awake a print
job starts very quickly. Printer connection is via a USB cable or
parallel printer cable.
Once this bad boy starts printing it really moves! I haven't
timed the print speed, but the rated 17-ppm does not seem like an
exaggeration. There are also a lot of nice firmware based
features described in the UserGuide that aren't mentioned in the
advertised specifications: Toner-Saver Mode (get 3000 pages at 5%
coverage from a toner cartridge), 300/600dpi (by the way, the
300dpi mode produced better quality prints than the "Best"
setting on my 960c. For images you need the 600dpi, but for
everything else the 300dip setting is fine), Printing Multiple
Pages on One Sheet of Paper (N-Up Printing, up to 16 pages on one
page), Scaling (reduce/enlarge on a page), Printing Posters
(allows you to print a single-page document onto 4, 9,or 16
sheets of pa per, for the purpose of pasting the sheets together
to form one poster-size document) and many other nice features.
ON THE DOWN SIDE is the rebate. There is a $50 rebate but the
rebate application indicates a wait of AT LEAST 12-weeks!
Remember when they used to be six? They want a street address, a
phone number, an e-mail address, the serial number, the invoice,
the barcode from the box and a signature. My guess is that this
rebate is going to be a challenge to collect. Downgraded one
step because of the rebate terms.
Another small disappointment is the sound level. I think it's a
little high, but certainly not objectionable. It may be that I'm
just used to the whisper-quiet of an inkjet.
