What do I need to record progs/films from the TV and convert to play on my
iPAQ 2210. I dont have a TV card in my computer and thought of maybe
getting a dvd recorder but don't know the format they use, and if it's
convertible for WMP on the PDA. Would it be simpler/cheaper to obtain a TV
card and record to the hard drive? If so, again, what format would it be
stored as.

Many thanks

The easiest way is to use a usb TV input... there are several that have
tuners, and some that simply convert composite video signals from a TV
or VCR into a digital format.

Once in, there are a number of software options that can generate
video... havn't done it, but think that WMP is one.

You can get a tv card and record right to your hard drive. Most if not all
of the tv cards have programs you can use to record with. Many of them save
files in mpeg which is usually larger filesizes than windows media files.
Plus windows media player on your 2210 can play windows media files
natively. If you want to record shows as well as stream things to your
device over a wireless network, checkout an article on snapstream's beyond
tv ver 3.4(ver 3.5 broke alot of things)

I got a Leadtek winfast DV2000 TV/PVR card from PC World Component
Centre (UK, Online store) for about £45 GBP. As well as having
3xfirewire inputs, it comes with personal video recorder software**.
You plug in your antenna (or S-Video cable or FM aerial), tune the
channels then set it to record on a schedule.

Your recording options include output direct to windows media format
files (as well as AVI) so yes it's possible. You could even
theoretically attach a SD card reader and have it encode the TV show
direct to the SD card, pop it into your iPAQ and away you go, assuming
the card could keep up with the data rate. Better to play safe though
and record to a fast hard disk first.

Only thing to remember is these sorts of apps are very resource
intensive - my Athlon 1700 w/384 Meg can barely keep up with recording
the TV at full screen and encoding it at full size. It works somewhat
better at 320x240 croppped which is what you'll be needing for your
PPC display. Expect to get about 1.5-2 hours onto a 256meg card at
320x240 and 15fps.

** It also came with ULead studio SE software for recording and
editing DV camera video, as well as DVD creator software ;-)

Cheers - Neil

get a tv card and look into snapstream "beyond tv" works like Tivo on your
PC. has a full range of encoding options including formats and quality. it
will even let you record at a higher bitrate for viewing on PC and it will
automatically re-encode your file on schedule for use on a pocket pc.
allows for remote access so you can start/stop and setup recordings while
away from home (assuming your pc is accessible online) you can even watch
live TV and or your recordings remotely. pretty cool product.
