RAM choice will make or break an AM2 system.

http://legitreviews.com/article/347/1/

Although this was true on s939, it seems, even more important on AM2.

PS. I wasn't sure whether to post this in Memory, or CPU, so i chose CPU

since the IMC is part of CPU -sort of ....Technicalilty.

Basically, having great RAM , can more than make up for >200Mhz, or

more. So instead of buying a x2 5000+, grab the 4800+, and sink the money

saved into a little better memory. :?

OK....... Is there a way that i can delete this thread then?
Nah, I like this thread. (Think of it as a refreshed one without all that MMM crap)

And I've just found my counter weapon here.
Notice DDR2-800 3-3-3-x on the AM2 platform used by Anandtech, that's gotta be more than generous. While S939 is on 2-2-2-x as one would expect.
Then read on for Bungliomarks and gaming performance. That's the ugly truth.

LOL... Thanks guys, for not calling me an idiot.

Thanks Jack.

Not realizing that MMM's thread existed(until Wusy told me) i

checked it out. I think he's(MMM) beginning to feel like a cornered dog. Now

that lot's of benches are coming in, they are disproving his theory that

Conroe is only good at Super Pi 1M....due to large cache. Conroe is pretty

much sweeping the majority of benchmarks, and WR's are toppling all over

the place, so.... he does what he does best....He acts like a baby. He would

most surely give up computers altogether than admit to Intel having the

superior architecture.

Nahhh he would just say something like "Wait for AMD's next chip" wich could be true ? Its hard to imagine something faster then Conroe right now but someday it will seem slow.(its still not out but everyone who has touched it is impressed so its got to be good)

My opinion of AMD and AM2 is this, AM2 is so they can support DDR2 and maybe some good revision of the Athlon 64 K8L ? I cant say if it will compete with Conroe at all. AMD's future will depend on how quickly they can respond to the performance and price pressure Intel is placing on them. Intel suffered for years under the Athlon 64 (although they still made money so I dont think they suffered too much lol) Now the tables have turned or will turn very soon and AMD doesnt have the deep pockets Intel has... Im sure this will force AMD to make something fantastic in return so the AMD fans might have to tread water for a bit :) All in all I havent been this excited about hardware in a long long time. Honestly I didnt see much reason for any upgrades as the increase just wasnt worth it (other then in video cards but thats always going to be like that... although I wish they would slow down a bit lol)

Edit: On the topic... Memory is always important especialy with a fast CPU. I consider it to be a priority when I spend money on a new system and often I have spent as much on RAM as I have the video card.

This is a great point, Jan. 06 saw the FX-60 released which then was the worlds fastest CPU, a short time later it looked slow.... that is why these new developments are sooooo amazing.

Jack
It is truely amazing. The last 5 years, we never really saw

anything "substantial" powerwise. Some cache here, FSB there. I figured

we had been hit by the law of diminshing returns. Much like cars. The

late 70's thru 80's til late 90's, high performance cars came with 200-250

h.p. Now in the new Millenium, after years and years of no innovation,

your average sedan comes with an optional 300h.p , and ie: a Corvette

now pumps out 400 h.p. STOCK. Just when you think you've reached

the pinnacle....Something drastic happens. SO cool.

Hopefully they can get this much single-threaded performance merged into an inverse threading design in the not too distant future eh guys. That would be another even bigger leap.
