My friend and I are putting new parts into his computer and there are some problems. We have installed a DVD/CD drive, and a different hard drive (we took the old one out). The hard drive is plugged into the primary IDE plug, and the jumper is set to master. The DVD/CD drive is plugged into the secondary IDE plug, and the jumper is set to master. The power cables are plugged into the both, so that is not the problem. When we turn it on, we try pressing the open button on it, nothing happens. We have no idea why, we have checked, double checked, and triple checked every connection. Also, if we turn it on, it gives us options on the motherboard (delete is bios, control+c is clocks, and there are a few more options). If we try any of these buttons/combinations, they don't do anything. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appriciated.

edit: if it helps, it is an Athlon XP 2200+ on an nforce motherboard. We also still need to install windows, which is why getting the drive to open is such a big deal.

You could always try the emergency eject button. There should be a

very small hole on the front of the CD player. Straighten out a paper-clip,

and insert it into the hole. Theres a little pin in there. Push it in, and the

drive door will open, even without power. Insert your Windows disk, then

push the door closed...gently. Now try and power up, maybe it will read

the disk. GL :)

What hard drive? If it's a Western Digital, "Master" doesn't work for a single drive, remove the jumper and it will be set as "single"

One other thing to check - what plug on the cables are you using? I understand that you can use "cable select" rather than manually forcing master/slive on the drive jumpers (most people avoid this as it often doesn't work). I would imagine that setting an optical drive to "slave" via jumpers, but plugging in the "master" plug on the cable might cause problems. Just a thought.

BUT
The drive not opening sounds like a drive fault. As long as it has power, you should be able to open the drive. Have you tried the drive in a different PC?

Also, not being able to get into BIOS concerns me. I hope your mobo is OK.

But it would be REALLY unlucky (and quite unlikely) to have two DOA components!
