I need a computer to be on for 7/24. Which should I go for, they both cost about the same, but some benchmarks show that D950 is faster, even faster than 4600+?

I vote 950. Make sure you stick with the Intel heatsink that comes with and buy artic silver 5, I know its expensive but well worth it.

i'll say go with Intel Pentium D 950... and AMD ... well forget abt it... also if you can wait which i don't think so as u've mentioned the date... u can wait for new processors intel is releasing... "conroe", and that is an xcellent CPU. u might consider it too...

I'll say 4400+. The 4600+ only have 2*512 on die and the 4400+ has 2*1MB
I own the 4400+ and it flies so if you want dual core go with 4400+ it's the best bang for your buck! Also the heatsink that comes with it has copper heat pipes which is very cool fo a stock heatsink just add some artic silver and you'll be fine. The only thing I would concerned with is not the processor but how much ram you have because the more you have, the more head space
you'll give it the work with. I have the X2 4400+ 2gigs corsair XMS, Xfi, X1900XT, 250 Gig HD A8N SLI Premium.

Go for whichever option(inlcuding the entire platform) is cheaper.

Intel really has got AMD by the balls on price this time when they say the mean bussiness.

lol!!! now that's wot i call competition 8)

What is the system going to be used for? Different CPUs are better for different things.

PS IF you're thinking of leaving a computer on 24/7 why not think about one of the new low powered EE AM2 CPUs, they seem to be VERY efficient.

AMD has nothing to do with "bang for the buck"...

You could wait until 23rd of July and get the new 945 (950 without VT) for 163$ or the Core 2 Duo E6300 for 183$

If you want the best performance for money buy the 4400+ but if you can wait a couple of months buy the Conroe E6300 which will outperform them both at a lower price.

Thank you for all of your good advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I will wait for Conroe to come out, and go for Conroe E6600 for the same price, but outperform AMD FX62. Looks like there will be a big price drop coming up, when Conroe kick out to the market. If AMD compete with Intel and make FX62 cheaper than E6600, then I will post another topic about " FX62 or E6600? " to receive good advice from your professional opinion again.

Hey You ever Thinking about takeing a Look at Server Chips? They are Made to Run 24/7- 365 Days a year, And the AMD64-Opteron 170-175(Dual Core) will Do you at about the same price as a AMD-Athlon64 4600+ And they are both socket 939 so they will be easly put into the same Motherboard.
And even on Stock speed they do As well as a 4400+ And Overclocked on Fan can easly Handle a 2.6Ghz-2.8Ghz Overclock (same Levels as FX-62)

good point there. the guys is wanting to run a server but doesn't mention server chips.

Edit: ok so he didn't say he wanted to run a server but it amounts to the same sort of usage.

After about 12 people replyed and a few hundred people read this Post. I got Surprised and Just wrote that. Everyone Knows that a Computer that runs 24/7 without comprimising performance is the definition of a Server Yet nodbody pointed that out just because he said Intel D950 or AMD 4400+ ?

100% D950. it has a lot faster than 4400. if you can wait until july, you can get conrole. If you must now, choose motherboard carefully so that it will allow you to upgrade to conroe.

Bye.

Yes, but by purchasing the 950 combined with the right mobo means you can upgrade to Conroe in the near future, using the same board, memory, drives and video card... saving you money and giving you good performance now, and great performance later!!! did I mention that also this would save money in the long run... even more money saved if you bought a low end dual core intel for the short interim ( <$200 ), and then a $300 Conroe in a month or two...
Those two CPU's combined cost a bit less or the same than an Opteron 175, and you would end up with a faster performing PC than AMD, and you could sell your first CPU on eBay or something recouping some cost making it even more of a bargain.

It appears you are getting a lot of extreme advise on both ends of the spectrum -- alas, I am afraid you are no better off now than when you asked your original question. I think RichPLS is the best advice -- do some research on what is coming in the next 6-12 months.

Just keep in mind, if you read a little deeper and search for things like Intel and AMD roadmaps. Intel is progressively chopping prices over the next several months. If you time it right you could save yourself and extra 100 or 200 bucks regardless of what CPU vendor you choose.

Jack

Well Giving advice of Running a Server 24/7 Is'nt Extreme*(that's what a Server Chip is Made for :? ) The Pentium Xeon Is A server chip You can run that if you like but it'll cost a crap load of money to catch up to Opteron 175 In performance and Overall low cost

And i've never heard of servers Not wanting to run Server chips** if they had the choice to run a regular chip and/or running a Xeon or an Opteron

**He clearly defined he wanted to Run a Computer 24/7 and in my little experience It's better to run something at what it's said to do. It's better not to try to make a 3800+X2 run a Opteron 175s job 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 365days a year.
